i don't like mix and match to close out games. You get a guy and stick with it. All you do is take everybody out of their element. Javy gets the out in the 8th inning, the 9th is a different animal.

Does closer by committee ever work?

Yeah. It always seems as if when you manage that way, you manage to identify the pitcher not "on" that night.

Bumgarner to Bochy: You should have let me hit
April 21, 2012, 9:11 am

NEW YORK -- The Giants used 20 of 24 players in Friday night's 10-inning victory and the 25th, Ryan Theriot, was stuck in San Francisco with what we'll tastefully describe as significant gastrointestinal distress.

The Giants will be a man down again today. Theriot was finally cleared to travel today, but unless they put the Concorde back into service, he won't make it in time for this afternoon's game at Citi Field.

Brett Pill is taking ground balls at second base as we speak. Late last night, after Pill was removed from the game, Giants manager Bruce Bochy looked around his bench and realized that Aubrey Huff was his only backup option if something happened to Emmanuel Burriss. So yes, the game could've been even more interesting than it was.

As it stood, Huff was used as a defensive replacement in left field for the 10th inning. I do not believe I will be able to type that sentence again this season, or this lifetime.

As I wrote last night, Bochy made a point to talk to Santiago Casilla after lifting him from a save situation. He said Javier Lopez is paid a lot of money to get lefties out, which he does very well, and the Mets had three of them stacked up. This morning, I asked Bochy if he would've left Casilla in there if the Mets had just one lefty. He said yes, Casilla would've been his guy. So while this is a closer-by-committee, officially, Bochy won't be bound to get every matchup in the late innings.

Bochy might have to check in with a couple other players about one of his moves from Friday night. Namely, his choice to use Matt Cain to pinch hit for Barry Zito in the sixth. With two outs and the bases empty, and a short bench, it was an obvious move to pinch-hit another pitcher. But Bochy chose Cain over Madison Bumgarner and Ryan Vogelsong, who can swing it a little. These kinds of things make for some good-natured ribbing on the bench.

Late in the game, Bumgarner wandered over to Bochy and drawled, "If you'da let me hit, we'd be shower'd and gone by now."

uh....everybody?

For instance:

...and of course last night's game was the exact situation envisioned by those who wanted chez3 on the team, while also showing the validity of the opinion that he's got some work to do behind the plate.

While I think you are giving credit to Chez3 for his hitting , and very deservedly so, let's also give him BIG props for making the block and tag at home to get that HUGE game-saving second out in the ninth.

Maybe he's a little leaky for now catching major league pitching, but at 5'11" and 225 lbs, he made a MAJOR League play in a clutch situation on that tag. The runner wanted NO part of Hector there.

That was a big play. Really nice play by Belt too. But.....don't get me wrong...I think Chez3 has all the tools to be a very good defensive catcher - he just needs some reps.

Wow, what a crazy game. I think Bochy did some good work there.

If I'm not mistaken, with Theriot unavailable, he used every damn player in the dugout except Otero, Timmy, Vogs, and Bum.

But not scoring Posey from 3rd with no outs in the 3rd was what got our pen burnt up.

Nice to see another good start from Zito. If he actually is a so-so pitcher this year that's like found money.

And our big 3 keep on hitting. Dbacks lose, we're ahead of them now...

Good game.

It'll take another couple of starts, but wouldn't it be nice to not cringe seeing that it's Zito's turn to pitch?
