Agreed. I always say that a team on a long losing streak is dangerous because with each loss the odds get better that they are gonna win the next one. A lot of people on this board don't understand that concept though. It's not Vogelsong that I'm writing off, its the Giants hitters.

It doesn't work that way.... let's take a simple example like a coin flip. People think that each time, say, heads comes up than the greater chance that tails comes up the next time. That's wrong...the odds are the same on each flip....50/50...

But over a period it evens out; it has to. If the first ten coin flips come up "Heads", the odds are that eventually it is going to turn up Tails. That is why you see astute gamblers watching a roulette table for an extended run of Red or Black and then they throw everything on the opposite color of what had been coming up consecutively. try it sometime, it works.

The "period" over which things "even out" is infinity. If the events are truly independent then there is no memory of what occurred before. This does not apply to human events though, so NN chooses the wrong tack to defend his theory of teams on a losing streak being more dangerous than winning teams.
