Although I agree smith should have made a throw there, I feel more comfortable with him taking the sack(still in FG range) there than forcing a pass that could have been bad

What? He did a nice job of stepping up in the pocket. The blockers got beat twice on the play. After he stepped up they still decided not to block the guy and he was able to get Smith from behind.
