I guess we'll disagree here. I thought he was definitely looking for contact, but once MVP set up inside the foul line he knew he couldn't go after him and it was too late for his fat ass to slide outside.

Two things: You'd have to be running a ways off the line to hit the back side of the plate, especially a big man who can't change direction (in mid-air!). And, if you do run off the line, you allow an easy throw to home from the LF line. There's a good possibility Fielder was trying to block the throw from left field by running on the line.

I did not see Fielder's eyes on Posey as he ran down the line, that's why I didn't think he was thinking of blowing Posey up.

Fair points.

I think this clip shows that Fielder only veers inside the baseline as he's entering his slide (indicated by the slight body lean away from Posey), which is consistent with the thought that he is probably trying to make the throw as difficult as possible, and/or blocking it - and not targeting Posey.

also...look at Belt in that clip......He should be on the 2B bag, or close enough to take a throw and put on a tag.

and just to :deadhorse:

From Baggs:

Posey did just what he was asked to do, as Fielder verified.

"He gave me the plate," Fielder explained. "Whenever that happens, you gotta make the slide."

I can't help but wonder if Fielder had in mind the Cousins collision, and the ramifications for him, his team, and baseball in general if he went after Posey and injured him.

With 40,000+ rabid fans, things could have got out of hand in a big hurry. My guess is that someone would have done something stupid and it would have spiralled out of control very quickly.

Thank God it turned out as it did.

I think it's as simple as Fielder being a veteran and being coached to slide if the plate is open (and the catcher has no rep for blocking the plate). Veteran + Star + Strong Leadership from the bench vs. Rook + Scrub + Led by other punks.

That, too.
