Yep. I've noticed something I had previously missed with every read. Of course with eleventy godzillion pages it's pretty easy to miss or forget something.

Yeah, ripping through Lord of the Flies isn't quite the endeavor that reading Martin's canon is.

The copy I bought was 674 pages. Were it to be what I like, it would have had to have been close to 1000 pages or broken down into 2 books. I understand why that did not happen and am not being critical of his work when I say it just wasn't for my taste. I am like you in the way that if it piques my interest I will read it time and again.

That show will go down in history has the greatest television show with the most epic fail wind down and conclusion. They just mailed it in at the end. Joke.
They didn't mail it in. They just sucked at it. The budget and effort were real.

I feel like the extra amount of detailed effort you are looking for keeps growing with every book.

once they got past Martin's writing, the show fell apart. They should have never started a fucking show for a series of books that wasn't yet complete. Dumb.

kind of like the Harry Potter books. The writing matures as you progress.

That is great to hear, thanks a lot. I have been debating on going to the library and checking out Clash of Kings with that hope. I have decided not to buy the rest of the ASOIAF books until I know if they are any more suited to my taste.

Eh. I'm just busting stones. I used to read Golding's Lord of the Flies every year. Did that for probably 7-10 years, I'm guessing. Seems like you always find something new in good books as your perception changes.

I also used to watch Band of Brothers every year in the fall/winter.
Lord of the Flies was one of my favorite books in high school.

I did a research paper on it in high school about the symbolism and all that...weird how I don't think about symbolism all that much anymore when I read.
I know. I had to do a creative writing on this, basically writing a sequel in modern times, how the kids would re-adjust to society. It was fun.

Sometimes I wonder how much symbolism authors intended, or if the curtains were just fucking blue.

Just because you don't think about it doesn't mean it's not there..... :2cents:

I think that too...and sometimes I know I am missing something they really wanted to get across.

Going to Q&A sessions for authors at Comic Con and what not is really a good way to get those questions answered.

shit, even Harry Potter was deeper than just "You're a wizard, Harry."

I miss Cliffs Notes, sometimes.

I like hearing it from the author. Anything else, especially in school, can be opinion disguised as fact.

It's subjective.
You may find symbolism that the author didn't even intend to make.

The Wizard of Oz is a fairly decent example of this with political and economic allegory.

oh, certainly. Most it is perceived...and most of it goes over my head.

"oh...that person was supposed to represent God?" Dammit.

The first text book that should have been given for English Literature should have been a comprehensive list of symbolism. The second should have been an English to English translation of Shakespeare.
