According to GRRM, how the show ends will not be that different from how the books end (if he ever finishes them, that is). I recall quite a while back either Martin or D&D saying as much ... that while how various characters get to the end may be different, but the ending won't be.

“I don’t think Dan and Dave’s ending is gonna be that different from my ending, because of the conversations we did have,” he says, decisively putting many rumors to rest. “But on certain secondary characters there may be big differences.”

Kurt Sutter said that he thought of ending Sons of Anarchy by having Jax daydreaming in a Starbucks drive through line while driving a Vespa.

There's been enough time to do the cgi on both dire wolves and dragons.

And the budget was dramatically increased for CGI this season.
