To answer your first paragraph, there are hardly any rinks or hockey leagues in Arizona. I honestly haven't heard of any place you can go play hockey in the East Valley (minus Polar Ice which is more of a family oriented ice rink) I wasn't a hockey player in HS myself, but I'm sure there's at least a couple more places out there that I'm unaware of. I think that's where it all stems from to be honest. Hockey is by far the least played sport in this state and it's not close.

There is one rink in Tucson, and it's not open to the public. It sucks. There's a roller league or several, though, and pickup street games, but it's all pretty small given the size of the city.
