Free agency is just minutes away and I'm hearing now that we're trading a second round pick to Tampa for Meszaros. I'm not sure whether that's even possible as his cap hit is $4 million. We'll see.

Well, I think it's more like 4 or 5 guys to sign. This type of a trade would also mean either Leighton is the guy or one of our expensive forwards is gone.

well since he signed i've thought leighton was going to be the guy.. they wouldn't sign him, then turn around and waive biron to sign another guy.. i just dont see that happening..

but after the mez deal the flyers are at like 52 mil.. still have what 7.1 mil.. gotta figure 3 goes to coburn.. 4.1 to sign 3rd and 4th line wingers... i'd say they're in pretty good shape

Well, they are saying right now on this live blog that we're still looking at a starting goalie and that may leave Coburn out. I'm curious as to how that works out. There is only $5.878 million to work with by my math.

Also, Meszaros and O'Donnell are tough defensemen who don't miss games. That means we may never see Bartulis as the six all season long, even though I think he's worthy of that position.

I can't believe all of this Kovalchuk free agency talk. And it was reported that NJ were on the verge of signing him to a $10 million cap hit for 6 years. You've got to be kidding me. There's no way on this planet that Kovalchuk is worth that cap hit. He'd be getting paid more than any other player in the Nhl, and this after he failed to get his Devils past us in round one after they won the division title.

Also, how on earth can the Devils be throwing $10 million at Kovalchuk when they only have $3.748 million in cap space? I guess Elias and someone else would have to be traded away. Even then, they'd still be short a few forwards and with zero cap space to fill those holes.

I simply cannot understand this bullshit. I'm just glad we definitely don't have the cap space to sign him. I predict whichever team finally does will soon be wishing they hadn't.

You can't me more than 10% over the cap at any time, and a $10 million deal with only $3.748 million left puts them over by $6+ million. 10% of the cap is $5.94 million. They'd have to make before signing him, then again afterwards to get under the cap. And they probably wouldn't have enough to re-sign both Parise and Greene after next season. I really don't think Lou is that stupid.

With a cap hit like that you are basically saying you are a 1 man team. I hope the Devils do sign him so the have to get rid of some 2-3 other really good players. The Kings have apparently backed out again, so not many teams left unless he want to play for the Isles. I think they are pretty far below the floor and could give him what he wants money wise, but then again he would be on the Isles

The latest rumors from Hockey buzz


1. All this while a few rumors are surfacing that Kovalchuk may indeed take a one year deal in Detroit or Philly.

-I personally can't see this happening unless he takes a ridiculous pay cut down to say Coburn type money at the absolute most.


2. Don't count Jose Theodore out of the running for Philadelphia.

- First time hearing this even though I had a feeling he wasn't off the Flyers radar. I don't know if he woudl really be an upgrade over Leights though since he seems to be a head case.

3. I still feel strongly that Paul Kariya is destined to be a Penguin, while I can see Billy Guerin going to NJ or Philadelphia. Yes Philadelphia...

-i personally would love Guerin on the Flyesr for something like 1m a yr or so. He is still a fierce competitor and loves to set up shop in front of the net, I could see him being a great compliment to Richie and Carter on the top line.
