excerpt from Gretzkys book ... after the Oilers lost in their first Stanley Cup appearance to the Islanders, Kevin Lowe and Gretzky were leaving the arena ...

Some 11 months ago, Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis sat down with Ryan Kesler at the team's exit meetings and showed him a clip of Jonathan Toews from the Blackhawks' playoff series with the Canucks.

The clip showed Toews battling for the puck, taking one cross-check, then another, being knocked down, then getting back up. Eventually, as you might have guessed, he would win the puck back and the Blackhawks would score.

Now, the exact circumstances around that clip are immaterial because it could have come from any game in the series and that's what was drummed into Kesler. This is the way you play the game, the Canucks centre was told. You don't make a crack about the guy's wife or girlfriend. You don't give him the stick or a sucker punch in the scrum. You keep your mouth shut and you keep coming and keep coming and when it's all over, you just might end up with a ring.

Last season, Kesler scored 25 goals and had 104 penalty minutes. This season he scored 41 and had 66 penalty minutes.
