You know I remember the late 80s in Alberta when the hockey was good and the Alberta Heritage Fund was churning along nicely and people were saying that we really need to diversify this economy because oil isn't going to last forever. Fast forward 30 years and it appears that very little has changed in that regard. What has changed, the hockey isn't great and neither is the economy.

The economy wasn't great in AB in the late 80s and that was kind of the death knell for the Fund, especially as a general recession nationally dragged into the 90s. Combined with the NEP taking money from Alberta while shit was still sweet and premiers (*cough* Ralph Klein *cough*) using fund money to reduce deficits it never really stood a chance.

Regardless, you don't need a $50 billion wealth fund to diversify your economy when you have the advantages the province of Alberta has - a mostly hospitable climate with plenty of available, cheap land situated in a first-world democracy with a robust immigration policy that attracts a significant amount of talent. The fact they absolutely squandered the 2005-15 boom doesn't leave me feeling too sorry for anybody there.
