The reality is masks will help prevent you and those around you from getting sick but will still not be enough to totally prevent infection because nothing will be until the vaccine shows up and lockdowns are still likely and are going to save lives. The CDC saying something that is proving to be untrue will result in even less trust in the CDC once lockdowns inevitably become required - "Y'all told us if we wore them masks we wouldn't have to gorenteen! SCAMDEMIC!"

At this point the CDC should probably be advocating lockdowns in the US given the infection and death rates, not promoting false hope that they can be avoided.
