Belgium is one of the most divided countries on earth, has about a zillion political parties and is still technically trying to mandate a government despite their most recent election having occurred on May 26. Of 2019.

Belgian democracy actually might make the American system look good in comparison lol

I look at Belguim like England but with a sh*t ton of political parties.

Tell me what the difference between their Socialist Party and the Socialist Party - Differently is , except for the word Differently and what it mainly comes down to is one is French only.

Interesting. Did not know that. Regardless, I like the idea of mandatory voting myself. I realize it is likely impossible but as a glass half full, realistic idealist (is there such a thing lol?), I always think to myself, ‘imagine if ______ What would it look like’

The fact they can make elections tolerable and more like a holiday is really a novel concept outside the US.

I see a bit of Canada in there as well but it's less-defined - there's the separatist/language barrier thing in there with Quebec but whereas in Belgium the Dutch part is very right-wing and the French part left-wing in Canada Quebec is socialist with racist undertones while the rest of Canada is a mixed bag of liberalism and conservatism.

But yeah, any election where the biggest party only gets 13% of the votes is just pointless lol.

Went to Belgium for a work trip a while back. Having lunch with the main point of contact there and talking about Belgium and Brussels since it was my first time visiting. This guy, who has a very French last name and speaks English with a French accent (pronounced, but not heavy) says the French speakers are the problem in Belgium. Seeing my clear - "I'm confused, I thought you were a French speaking Belgian" look, he proceeds to talk about how "his people" never bother to learn English or Flemish and how the whole country would be better off dropping French.

It was an interesting conversation.
