A little lighter fare:

PETA finds name of rural road in Idaho distasteful, asks for change

PETA finds name of rural road in Idaho distasteful, asks for change

BOISE, Idaho — Chickens are friends for some people, dinner for others. Sometimes both.

But one animal rights group feels that the name of a rural road in the Treasure Valley region isn’t kind to poultry.

PETA sent out a news release this week alerting Idaho media that it has written a letter to Caldwell Mayor Garret Nancolas to ask for a change to the street name Chicken Dinner Road. However, Caldwell city street maps don’t include Chicken Dinner Road, which is located in rural Canyon County.

“Just like dogs, cats, and human beings, chickens feel pain and fear and value their own lives,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in the letter.

She wants the mayor to change the name of the road to “one that celebrates chickens as individuals, not as beings to kill, chop up, and label as ‘dinner.’”

Susan Miller, the Caldwell mayor’s assistant, told the Idaho Statesman that she wasn’t sure whether Nancolas would be issuing a response to PETA’s request.
Does PETA really wonder why nobody takes them seriously anymore?

These things always make me laugh. For starters, what difference does it really make, given that people from all over the world all claim to be the original, the birthplace, the creator, etc. of all sorts of different things. I mean, there's like 5 different places in the US that fight over something as trivial as who invented the hamburger.

My point being that it's absurd to take something like electricity or nuclear technology and claim it as the work of one person. And to be clear, I'm picking on both the White House/President and the responder.

To say the internet is English is misleading at best and is really just because most people don't know the difference between the internet and the world wide web. And even though the web (not the internet) can be attributed to one English person, to say even that the web is English requires us to ignore the fact that he was working for a European agency at a lab in Switzerland when he created it.

And if we put aside the disputed claims over who actually invented the telephone, it was indeed invented by a Scottish person...who was living and working in Canada and the United States.

/end rant

I think the reporter was trying to point out the people behind those discoveries/inventions were not Americans to refute the claims that they were all "American" discoveries, not so much that one person was responsible for the whole of it.

Realistically, if the reporters retort had said "Tim Berners-Lee was English" how many people would really know who that was (not to mention Ernest Rutherford)? Gotta play the audience. Saying Benjamin Franklin was English is technically true but not really telling the story, if they wanted to make a point they should say the person who made electricity safe for home use and thus caused the rapid adoption of it was Croatian. And he did it with American money.

Its called universal care because those that have it have to travel halfway across the universe to see their primary care doctor. And they have to wait 2 light years to get an appointment! And tax payer dollars go into a black hole! not thanks komrade!

My issue is that the reporter is just as wrong. Responding to false or misleading information with different false or misleading information isn't helping anything.

And I'm not picking on you - I'm picking on the entire idea of nationalism on things that are the result of a global group of people who are/were way smarter than me - but he was technically a Serb, born in modern-day Croatia, which was at the time part Austria, who later became an American citizen, and whose remains were shipped to Belgrade, which was at the time part of Yugoslavia. :thumb:

(Sorry, I say all of that to further illustrate the stupidity of nationalism on something like this because you could argue that the guy was Austrian, Croatian, Serbian, or American and you'd be technically right in each instance).
