Anyone against getting either Ryan Whitney or Edler from Vancouver? Edler has a small cap hit. I'd give it a shot.

i like edler, but i dont think vancouver is gunna try to move him.. they like him too.. i'd try to make an offer though

if whitney could ever stay healthy id be for it, but chances are he'd only play about 50% of the time

Agree. Whitney has the injury bug unfortunately. I've heard Gonchar's name linked to us. Don't want him at his age and cap hit.

do not want gonchar. not even a little bit. if he was a FA signing a new contract maybe, but at 5 mil, please no..

comforting part of that rumor is its from bruce garrioch who is the 'eklund-like' (according to sens fans anyway)

what?

no mention of John Scott?
I'd like them to make a play for Garrison from Florida

yep me too.. he's my primary target if i'm in charge.. mostly because i think suter is going to detroit for whatever he wants

i can get behind that.. i doubt the rags would part with him unless the compensation gives them at least 2 1sts though.. based on how the way the flyers look right now though, id probably be ok with that.. certainly better than 2 1sts, your most recent 1st round pick, and a top 6 forward for a guy that's over the hill..

Id really do like him. And I would prefer getting two young solid dmen at 4mil than 1 big dman at 7-8mil. Just seems like the latter is more likely.

agree w/ you 100%.. i'd rather get 2 young guys too.. although, assuming they resign carle, they only need 1.. i wouldn't want to see any of mesz, coburn, timonen, carle, or grossmann scratched, and it would be rather silly to sign a 2nd guy only to have him be the 7th dman

assuming carle is resigned (it just seems likely from all reports).. sign another dman this year.. draft a dman this year.. and then probably sign another next year

Panthers, Garrison discuss extension.

The Florida Panthers could have defenseman Jason Garrison locked up with a new contract in the next few days.

ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun reports contract negotiations between the Panthers and the UFA-to-be will “resume this week”, at which point the defenseman can expect an offer” from General Manager Dale Tallon.

'Could'?

What would be our plan if garrison signs with Florida?

.. i dont even know.. he's the guy i really want haha

i think my backup plan would be kuba or souray at that point.. neither of which are as enticing as garrison.. but they are both big bodies.. kuba had a pretty strong season in ottawa and apparently it looks like they wont resign him (Senators likely parting ways with Kuba - sportsnet.ca).. souray can still bring the bomb that i think the flyers need but meltzer says he's slowed down big time

i think kuba would be my next target.. not a young guy that will grow with the team, but he'd be a solid defender and a stop gap for a year? (he's 36, which isn't ideal at all, but he's a good player for the money (3.7))

i think if garrison resigns and suter signs with detroit, the flyers would be looking to trade for someone rather than sign a FA.. might be looking to trade regardless.. i expect they'll do something at the draft though

IMO I think we either move up to draft a top d-man or they go the trade route(most likely).

Most of the UFA d-men are too old and past their prime, and the good one's-Rozsival,Suter,Stuart,etc. are going to cost a shitload.

Kubina and Grossman revisited?

Go with the trade route if they can't make a play on Garrison IMO

that'd be fine w/ me as long as kubina's replacement doesn't get hurt.. in the first 5 games or so kubina was the better addition

i would rather go after a guy with some years left on him though, which i'm sure everyone does..

i dont think moving up in the draft will be worth it unless they can get griffin reinhart.. if they move up to take him i'm good with it.. right now my hope is that olli maata falls to the flyers (20th).. he's around 17 in most people's lists

ideal situation is if they could trade jvr (+?, maybe bob?) for a decent dman and a top 10 pick.. i dno if they could pull that off though (i'm gunna go research those teams haha)

wild (#7)
could be a decent fit.. they need some firepower up front and they have a very young defense.. not sure if they part with marco scandella (Hockey's Future - Marco Scandella) but he could be an interesting target.. and with harding probably leaving in free agency and getting starter money somewhere, they could use a backup / heir apparent to backstrom (34).. considering their rebuild and backstrom's contract being up next summer.. they could have him and bob split time, giving bob a chance to grow a little? jvr+bob for scandella and the 7th pick?

#8 Canes
also need firepower up front.. derek joslin (Hockey's Future - Derek Joslin) would be the target here.. he's my favorite of the 3 cause he's got more NHL experience.. i doubt the canes would be interested in bob, but perhaps jvr+1st for joslin+8th pick+2nd or 3rd rounder?

#9 jets
similar situation.. could use some firepower up front.. paul postma is probably the defender of interest (Hockey's Future - Paul Postma), but i dont think the jets would be interested in bob.. perhaps jvr+1st for postma+9th+2nd rounder?

bolts at 10 are more focused on getting dmen i would assume, as opposed to getting forwards so i dont think they're a match at all

not sure if those deals are fair.. and i'd prefer guys that are a little more experienced, but those are options i guess

it sounds like the flyers wont be able to take on any salary until july 1st (meltzer's blog today).. so if they do something at the draft it'd have to shed salary or just be a trade for someone's rights.. the latter is even more dangerous this year (and hasn't worked well for them in the past in terms of friendly contracts) because they wouldn't be able to sign anyone until the 1st anyway.. even if they agreed in principle to a contract, all it takes is an early morning call from someone with a boatload of cash to draw the guy away (same thing could happen to carle)

As much as everyone was down on carle if that happens we are screwed unless manning turns out to be the real deal, How come his name hasnt been in any of these articles JJ post
