I would love the way this defense looks, but i have to disagree on gust i thought he got beat badly on the boards on every shift by the devs front line and he certainly didnt look strong enough to be an everyday NHL defenseman but if he is the 7th d man im with that. I thought Bourdon was better at being a 6th.

Fair enough. I actually didn't even think about Bourdon lol. Yeah he might fill the perceived 'hole' at 6. Lets keep in mind that they were BOTH rookies this year. BOTH made great strides in their first NHL year. I totally agree with the along the boards getting beat by gus. Rookies arent strong enough yet. My bet is that improves in an offseason working with NHL trainers. Gus showed a real head for the offensive side too during the pens series and Bourdon showed a ton of very nice stuff before injury. My point is that we will definitely be way stronger at 6th next year than this year...

I hear ya but my thinking is that #1 dman are hard to come by and w/ Pronger hurt now is the time to go after Suter. Start the season with Gustaffson etc on fourth line if need be and then look to improve at trade deadline. We need that guy who can play in all situations like Pronger. We really missed him not only with the minutes he chews up but we missed his outlet passes and his presence on the PP.

Sorry to disagree with you awaz. That lineup looks sick. Gusty improved tremendously in the playoffs and was good when he wasnt hurt.

Assuming Carle/Pronger are gone:
#1 Coburn Suter (jesus christ)
#2 Kimmo Mez
#3 Gusty Grossmann

C'mon you cant say that doesnt look freakin amazing? Dude who scores on that? Im also betting Bryz has better than his worst career year next year too. There will be some cuts up front but I think its worth it to cut into that depth a little*.

*As long as it doesnt screw us down the road when its time to sign players like G.

ya i mean there's definitely other routes.. that lineup looks sick i cant disagree w/ that

Total: 62.05 mil
Projected 2012-2013 Space: 66 mil (conservative guess)
Cap Space Available: 3.95 mil

With Homer hinting at a $69mil cap, and with Pronger on LTIR that gives us $11.85mil. And hey give 7mil to Suter and we still have 4.95 for Voracek.

And with everyone still riding on the JVR/Schenn thing it really doesnt matter. That rumor died by 3+ months ago, and we havent heard anything since. Maybe Burke and Homer call eachother at the draft, but I think it is a bit out of hand to speculate about it. If that were the case, why arent we talking about how a Bobby Ryan trade is still imminent?

If it gets rid of Jvr I will keep the rumor going! I want Jvr, Carle and Shittey gone. I think a defense of Kimmo/Coburn/Meszaros/Schenn/Grossmann/Guss and Lilja would be sick. Maybe no real #1 with Kimmos decline but 5 legit top 4's.

From what I've been reading I have a feeling that Jagr will not be back next year. It looks like he wants to test free agency which I'm assuming means he will not stay here for less money. It a shame because it sounds like everyone on the team wants him back.

I am a little confused on this one. It almost sounds like he has made up his mind to go else where. Not sure what he was told but it sounds like they dont really want him. I have said it once and will say it again. If he goes, make a run at Whitney.

After jagr's playoff performance im not sure i want him playing with us if he was a coach that would be ideal. for the boys.

HockeyBuzz.com - Bill Meltzer - Meltzer's Musings: Packing Up

* Jaromir Jagr's situation is more complicated. The 40-year-old appears to want assurances that he will remain on the first line and have an opportunity to get back on the top power play unit. The team is being non-committal while saying they'd like Jagr back.

Lots of folks are running with the knee-jerk reaction that Jagr is as good as gone because the player repeatedly stopped short yesterday of saying he wants to come back to Philadelphia next year. However, what Jagr REALLY said, if folks were paying attention, was that he needs first to talk to his agent, ex-Flyer Petr Svoboda, as well as to the team about the direction they want to go in terms of his projected role next season.

The team's vision may or may not match his. Holmgren was realistic yesterday in surmising that Jagr very well may choose to talk to other teams on July 1.

If there isn't a hockey match with Philadelphia, he'll move on to another team. If there is a match, the player has already repeatedly said how much he loves the team and the city. He also stressed yesterday that it will be a hockey decision from his standpoint, not a money or sentimental one.

If those are his demands fine lets give it to him but then he has to accept 2 million .

I like that link in there to this, too (on edit: do hope the guy's hip is alright):

4. What happens with JVR?

It was undoubtedly a tough season for James van Riemsdyk. After signing a 6-year, $25.5 million extension last summer - which kicks in next season - van Riemsdyk battled through a concussion, foot surgery and an abdominal tear. He was never really himself.

It remains to be seen whether the Flyers will confirm a cam impingement in his hip, which we first reported last December. It's an unconfirmed injury that nagged his skating all season.

JVR's new deal will pay him an average of $4.25 million per year, which is $500,000 more than Claude Giroux. That's a tough pill to swallow. If the Flyers were to try to part ways with van Riemsdyk, who has promise, there will be no shortage of takers.

it's the coaches decision to determine what is best for the team. i wouldn't promise a player anything.

peace jagr.

Just my opinion here, but that last line should be reason to trade JVR. JVR will be making more than G. Damn right that's a tough pill to swallow. We can avoid any distraction potentially by trading JVR before his contract kicks in. I know G is a professional, but how can this not piss him off knowing he is the best player period on this team? This could get ugly!

nah.. it wont get ugly.. lots of the team makes more than G.. he signed the contract, he'll live up to it because there's nothing he can do.. you cant really hold out in hockey unless you're a current RFA.. and that just goes to arbitration after a while anyway

coburn, grossmann, jvr, timonen, briere, meszaros, carle, hartnell, pronger, bryz

all those guys make more than giroux.. and schenn/jagr were close

I know they are all rich. Still, that has to be tough I'd think. Of course, I'm thinking of the NFL and MLB athletes when drawing this conclusion. Hockey players may look at this different?
