Not really knowing too much about him, I would have looked up some stats to get a little more info and also find out specifically how the contract is structured. This looks like a low risk and potentially good reward signing for any team, including the Coilers.

Put it this way, I think I'd rather have this guy for 1 year and a max 3.775 mil than Alice 'LTIR' Hemsky (who signed for 2 years, 10 million). Now that is worth laughing about.

Hmm. I'm not sure about that one myself.

They're both risks but Hemsky has proven that he can put up points in the NHL.

He's just under a million dollars unless he hits performance bonus levels. If he hits them, he's probably worth the extra cash. Probably a good signing. Too bad it doesn't matter because the Flames aren't going to win the Cup next year and if he IS good he can make a ton of money somewhere else. As an undrafted player over 22 (he's 26), he is considered a UFA.

Hemsky had 10 goals and 36 points in 69 games last season and really showed signs of being disinterested on the ice (and that was in a contract year when you think it should be the exact opposite). Now he has 10 million reasons to lollygag through a couple more seasons.

All that is true, but it gives the Flames a chance to move an asset and get something in return if they feel that he's not going to re-sign with the team. Again, this is Cory Sarich money we're talking about folks, it's a no-brainer for one year.

Oh, I agree that it is a great move by Calgary. There's risk involved, but it's manageable and there's no way for it to hurt you long term, and if you can flip him and get something at the deadline, it's basically free assets. It's just that while this is a great contract, can you imagine if a playoff team like Pittsburgh or Nashville had gotten it instead? He's got the potential to be that one extra piece that turns a contender into a serious threat next year, and with that contract, you don't have to sacrifice much to get him or get burned too badly if he doesn't pan out. I'm really wishing the Flyers had made this signing instead of Calgary, although honestly we don't really need more offense, but rather defense and a mentally stable goalie. Instead we spend a million on Jodi Shelley. So yeah.

The cap hit isn't 3.775 million. It's only that high if he hits the bonuses, and teams are allowed a bit of leeway for doing that. And even if he exceeds that leeway, the Flames just get it taken off their cap space the next year, which is the only potential issue they could have, and also they aren't going to spend to the ceiling anyway so it's a non-issue.

Edit: Correction, the bonuses count against the cap until he cannot possibly earn them. Let me see if I can find out what his bonuses are...

Double edit: Performance bonuses over the cap in the final year of the CBA don't roll over to next year if they exceed the cap.

Triple edit: Holy fuck I have no idea how the cap works this year you should ignore me.

IMO the 'goodness' of this deal will depend on the new CBA and how they account for bonuses

my understanding of the current CBA is bonuses 'counted' but you were allowed to go over the cap on bonuses to a certain extent, 'bonus cushion' up to this year, the overages would count on the next year's cap.. this year bonuses counted fully against the cap because there was no 'next year' to apply the overages to

if my understanding is correct (questionable), and the CBA looks similar to the current one (doubtful), then the deal for the flames is a good one.. if he doesn't pan out, he's 925k, if he does, then you got something good and can spread the cap money over two years (assuming you dip in to the bonus cushion)

Looking for clarification regarding performance bonuses and cap hit, it well could be that the 3.775 cap hit might have to apply regardless of whether or not Cervenka hits the performance bonus targets. I still like the signing regardless.

Actually, nobody has any idea how the bonuses are going to work this year. The CBA expires just prior to the season, so that cushion might very well take effect, or might have no bearing whatsoever as it might not exist. Does anyone know if they are bringing up any major changes, or is it likely to just be some shift in revenues?

i think the IT topic aside from revnue/cap stuff is the olympics in sochi.. players want to go, NHL doesnt.. i think most Russians are going to go regardless, even if it means playing in the KHL for the year, so its probably a moot argument for the NHL

I think this is how things work in the current CBA, but who knows if it will change:

The bonuses still count against the cap for the season in which they can be earned, but a team has some leeway to exceed the cap into that bonus space.

If the earned bonuses push you over the cap for the season in which they were earned, the value of the bonuses over the cap will be applied to the team's cap for the following season.

It's probably one of those they are willing to give on if they can get more revenue away from the players in exchange. Can't imagine the league wants to lose all the Russians for an entire year.

Cervenka's bonuses totalling $2m are for Hart, Richard, Selke and Conn Smythe voting, all-star team selection, and top-10 scoring stats.

Cervenka was passed over in draft year because he weighed 127 pounds. Yes, 127.

wow

Did they have the right Cervenka?
