What do you suggest?

Looking for something I can carry discreetly.
Smith & Wesson M&P Sheild
Glock 43
Springfield Armory XD Subcompact.

They are all 9mm and very concealable. They also are available in .40 or .45. They also come in compact and fullsize if you want something larger that is very similar.

Go to a range and shoot some.

for something really small, my mom carries a Kel Tec P-32. That thing is smaller than your hand.

Are you comparing me to your mom?:D

Thinking 9mm. Like the idea of the Sheild.

Taking the safety class this weekend. Hope to have a better understanding after the class.

Perhaps a revolver in .38 special for a beginner? Get something with quality, that won’t jam as some semi autos possibly with certain ammo, as stated above. Easy to care for, simple to see if the chambers are empty.

I'm saying its easy to conceal, and pretty cheap, so you don't have to worry about scratches and other wear when you carry it all the time.

Hey @pooods , as stated before, go to a store and just ask to hold a bunch of different guns. Rugers have always felt good in my hand, but everyone is different. You’ll want to think about if you want a revolver or a semi auto. Revolvers are extremely dependable, fewer things to go wrong if/when you need it. Semi auto will (generally) hold more ammo and may be easier to conceal because they don’t have a cylinder. You’ll also want to think about caliber. For example a revolver will shoot a .38 and a semi will shoot a .380. The diameter is essentially the same, but the .38 will have a larger cartridge which means more powder and power and recoil etc. sounds like you’re already thinking 9mm which is a good choice imo. Others have their opinions, but I carry a 9mm daily. The Shield is a great little gun, I went with the Ruger LC9s. It’s a small frame 9mm that’s very easy to conceal. Go to the range and shoot a few different weapons, see what’s comfortable for you, in your price range. Have fun with it and practice, practice, practice.

Didn’t realize I was going to have to qualify tomorrow. Have not fired a weapon in 30 years. Ran to the range.

Holy crap I need work! 50 rounds in that one at 10, 15, 21, and 30 feet. Now that I look at it I guess it isn’t too bad. Said I needed to keep everything inside the 8. The rounds outside we at 30’. I won’t be shooting from that distance tomorrow.

Gave me a double action revolver on the first target. I couldn’t hit shit with it.

Shoot as many as possible. You will be surprised at how different they shoot/feel.

Lots of good answers and there are lots of good choices for you to buy.

If it were me I would answer how I want to carry and that will narrow it down a lot. I decided to pocket carry. I already owned a Ruger SP101 357 mag snub nose. The SP101 shooting 38s is a pleasure while the 357s are a handful. The only problem it is a little heavy.

I have 4 for pocket carry. The SP101 a S&W bodyguard in 38. Kel-Tec PF9 and a Taurus slim in 9mm.

All will do the job. Right now am carrying the S&W because of the reduced weight over the SP101 but I think once I have the Slim shot in it will be. Guns&Ammo tested all the pocket nines and the Slim survived the multi round torture test.

Full size I would go either with my S&W 4046 40 cal or my Sig226 in 9mm. The S&W is a former sales/demonstrator that had some mods done to it and should have not been sold but I am not complaining.

Went with a 9MM Shield today. Felt good in my hand. Fired 150 rounds through it this AM. By the third box I had a much better grouping at 20’ than the target I posted. I am pulling everything a little left. Must be the way I am squeezing the trigger.

Happy first time owner!

You and @bamabear82 can start a girls club.

Did you go with the pink grips with rainbow accents or the purple grips with hearts?

If you're looking at a 9mm I'd look at the Glock 43X, Sig P365 or Springfiled XD. I'm looking at 1 of those 3 for my new CCW gun. All are around $500. I'm leaning the Glock or Sig due to a larger mag. All are pretty comfortable

No need to spend a lot. Just get something reliable and go no smaller than a .380. My everyday carry is a CZ 2075 rami 9mm.

For every day carry (EDC) get something economical for you...a gun you don't mind accumulating and showing cosmetic wear & tear throughout the years and more importantly something you don't mind being confiscated by the authorities if you ever have to pull and/or shoot it. If you are in a situation where you pull and/or shoot, be prepared to possibly never see your gun again.

Over 20 years ago I had my snub nose .38 (Taurus 85) confiscated after an incident and I never got it back. Not a big deal because it was an economy revolver which is no longer manufactured.

Some choices:
The Ruger LCR revolver and Smith & Wesson 642 revolver are nice, but if you want to go a more economical route look at a Taurus 856 or even more economical, a Rock Island Armory Armscor M206 .38 special Spurless (item # 51280)...you can get a brand new Spurless M206 for slightly over $200.

https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/armscor m206 51280

Here's an interesting YouTube video of an inexperienced revolver shooter who flinches/closes his eyes while shooting the M206...hehe:

And another video of a more experienced shooter with the M206 (this model has a hammer spur)

If you prefer an auto pistol, take a look at the Ruger LCP II 380 ACP...you can get one for under $250.

https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/ruger lcp II

Whatever you get..... practice, practice, practice.
