That's gonna be a personal thing. I'd suggest going to a range and trying some different guns to see what you like. As far as being discreet, I like the .380's. Very compact. I can carry it in my front pocket and no one is the wiser.

Yep. Figured I needed to test drive a few. Just looking for suggestions. What to look for. What to stay away from. I am firearm ignorant.

I hear ya. I'm not the most knowledgable by any means. I have a 9mm and the .380. Both are Taurus's.

When I got mine I was looking for quality and price point. Taurus fit the bill. They also have the safety I wanted because I keep one chambered most of the time. I've never been a fan of guns without them. I'm just crazy like that, I suppose.

I started with the 9mm thinking it would be my carry, but it just proved to be a little too bulky for taste, so the .380 was the next step and so far so good.

If you are going to carry it what ever you choose practice with it. Practice drawing from your holster make it to the point you don't even think about what you are doing you just do it from muscle memory. I like handguns with just trigger safety like a Glock, less things to worry about when under stress.

I've got a S&W M&P 45C.

Not the smallest CC but I wasn't a fan of the smaller guns like the S&W Sheild (no offense @bamabear82 but you're a girl).

I have a ruger 9mm that I carry in a shoulder holster, it’s a little bulky but with a sweat shirt no one knows I have it on. I mainly carry it when I’m RZR riding and snowmobiling, never know when your going to run into a wolf or just a crazy person.

If I may, sounds like you are looking for a good "entry-level" carry gun? I would suggest going with a Ruger. They are nice guns but not going to break the bank. .380 would be nice and compact.

I always advise folks looking for a carry gun to be conservative. If you are going to carry it consistently its going to have wear & tear so don't plunk down a fortune on a collector's item. Ruger, Taurus are good options (as others have mentioned on here). Second, the mantra "go big or go home" doesn't work. .38's, .380's maybe 9mm depending on your comfort level.

I used to carry a .380 and went with the S&W M&P 9mm

In the guns and shooting forum? I don’t know, we should probably check with the mods first.

i'd suggest first
go to yer local academy store
or whatever sporting goods store
yall have out there with a good selection,
and putting each in yer hand
and get a feel for what physical size
feels comfortable and works for yer conceal -
likely, you'll quickly narrow down
where in the service to compact range
you want to be -
once you narrow down the physical size
(and weight),
then you can start focusing on grip, features, etc
which vary brand to brand -
likely, yer sales guy would be more than happy
to show you the various features -

guns up!!

for a beginner ,I would suggest a .38 or .380. now you need to decide on a revolver or semiauto, typically the 38 would be a revolver and the 380 a semiautomatic. Revolvers tend to be more foolproof, semis, especially cheaper models can be finicky with ammo and prone to jamming, whatever you decide on, practice ,practice, practice.

I carry a Sig Sauer p220 in 45 That is a full sized semi auto, take a look at a Sig p232 in 380, not cheap, but very dependable and compact.
