If anyone wants to list the contracts that are even 8 years and worked out for the team, I’d love to see the nominees.

I guess we could say that the 8 year deal for Manny Ramirez worked out because the Sox got 2 Titles out of him, but he was a miserable malcontent and he basically forced his way out by the end. That contract seemed like it was 20 years.

The Yankees signed Giambi for 7 years. That’s another that felt like 20 years.

Problem is you are conflating 8 year contracts of free agents who have already passed arbitration. You cannot compare Giambi’s contracts or Manny’s contract. You can compared Tatis’s buyout with Trout’s and I think he has done alright.

That’s fair. I know those guys were older when they signed their deals(Manny was 28, Giambi was 30). Tatis is much younger....but also has much less of a track record. I’d be afraid to give anyone a deal that long(including Trout & Betts). But we’ll see how it plays out. History is not on the side of the signing team.

If the Padres build around him as poorly as the Angels have built around Trout, he might want to get out of there before 14 years are up. Fuck the money if he really cares about winning. Half of that contract is more than he'll ever need.
I agree with this, but I think the Padres have some pretty smart people running their franchise. They have done a nice job of building a team for a run this off-seson.

Sure and there should be hesitation on signing any “long term” deals. I am just saying it is highly disingenuous that is it being compared to any of those contracts. He is better than Betts was at his age and would you flinched had Betts got a 7 year deal?

Neither Miggy or Albert were 22 when they signed their monster deals.

They were also first basemen and far less athletic than Tatis is (though Pujols was a great defender earlier in his career). The first A-Rod contract was pretty successful. He hit .304/.400/.591 with a 154 OPS+, 329 home runs and put up 56.4 WAR before opting out. A-Rod was 25 when he signed that contract. The Jeter contract worked out well (41.2 WAR over 10 years).

Kershaw's had some trouble staying on the mound but he's still managed to put up a 172 ERA+ and 33.9 WAR. He's still one of the best pitchers in the league.

And as bad as Miggy's current contract is, his first one worked out pretty well.

Ryan Braun signed an 8 year, $45 million extension in '08 which feels crazy to type now that Tatis is getting paid at 4x that rate over the life of his contract.

Projections are great. And he’s been great when he’s played, but I don’t see what the rush is and I definitely don’t understand the length.

It's surprising, but I think a lot of that is avoiding arbitration and any potential mess with trying to extend him several years later. Last thing a struggling franchise like the Padres needs is a Mookie Betts/Francisco Lindor situation. I do think they're trying to prove they're fully committed to building a legitimate World Series contender and building up a fanbase.

Again, I think of it more as buying out his pre-arb and arbitration years and signing a 10-year extension. It's possible he falls off early. It's possible he continues to play at an MVP level for a long time and it ends up being a bargain (in terms of $/WAR). We won't know the answer for a while.

Longoria was also extended several weeks into his career.

I would have no problem at all giving Mookie 7 years. I guess I would draw the line at 8 years for ANY player. Anything beyond that would make me really nervous.

Just saw on Twitter an interesting stat. Tatis is getting paid nearly 2 million dollars per game that he has played in thus far.

How much of ARod's success came from a syringe though?
Pujols was a great fielder when he was young.

The Mets are going to make one day "Bobby Bonilla" Day and give him an oversized check prior to the game for the rest of the contract. Of course he will get his money, though.

Not sure. He did benefit from playing in Arlington (his home OPS was significantly higher in 2001 and 2002, though his road OPS was still north of .900 all three seasons)

Are teams allowed to do a Bonilla contract nowadays?
