Just reported on MLB Network.
Great signing for both sides. Player gets financial security, team gets financial surety.

Why sign a 14 year deal? I don't get it. I would have done 7-8 or 10 at the absolute max.

14? NAHHHHHHH
Exactly. I wouldn’t give 14 years to any player in baseball history. It’s absurd. I would bet they are looking to dump his salary by year 8 or 9. That’s usually how these kinds of deals work.

Yep and as a player I wouldn't want to sign a 14 year deal when I'm 22. I would like to test free agency in my late 20's/early 30's again

Yup, because $340M is never enough......

WHat if you can turn that 340M into 400M+?

How much you think they give him on a 8 year deal? Let's agree to around 250ish.

30 isn't old in baseball so he can probably get another deal for 5-7 years for 150+ once he's still playing at a high level

Nah. I agree with Steel here. $340m guaranteed when you are 22 is just fine with me. Now he can get all fat and happy and the Padres will still have to pay him every cent. Terrible deal for the team.

I disagree. I think he will continue to strive to take his team to a world series championship or 2. Toward the back end of the contract (age 33+) he will still only be making just under $25MM. No one knows today what salaries will be like 10-12 years from now, but we can assume that they will increase, $25MM/year might be 3rd level salary by then.

The annual money doesn’t seem too bad. You are right about that. It’s the YEARS that are just absurd. How many deals of even 8+ years can you cite that worked out for the signing team?

Not many. I'm sure they have taken out an insurance policy on the contract. One that leaps to mind is Evan Longoria with the Rays. They signed him to a very team-friendly contract when he was very young and they were able to move him when he started his decline for a marginal package, but at least they got something for him (Denard Span, while at the end of his career still was a major league ball player). The minor leaguers they got for him have still got a chance to get better (a couple have been traded again for minor leaguers and international slot money).
Usually, however, the long term contracts are signed when the player is 28-29, rather than 22. We'll see how he performs over the term of this deal. I am optimistic that he will continue to improve and make the contract look like a good deal.

If the Padres build around him as poorly as the Angels have built around Trout, he might want to get out of there before 14 years are up. Fuck the money if he really cares about winning. Half of that contract is more than he'll ever need.

I didn't think the Padres had that kind of money.

I totally agree with the 14 years being absurd.

considering they bought out his pre-arb and arbitration years (and he was probably going to set arb records), it's more like a 10 year deal.

Darvish, Snell, Profar and Myers are free agents in 2024. Clevinger will be a FA in 2023

These long term deals always work out great.

Not sure why teams continue to do them

The ZiPS projections for Tatis are insane. It projects nine consecutive seasons of 5+ WAR, and that's with him projecting for under 500 AB all of those seasons (ZiPS projects the low playing time because he hasn't played a full season).

Projections are great. And he’s been great when he’s played, but I don’t see what the rush is and I definitely don’t understand the length.
