So, here is my idea related to the lockout that has been rumbling around my brain for the last week. You have a Web site where fans go on and sign a pledge that if hockey is not being played by X date, that fan pledges to do the following:
-Not attend any NHL hockey game for the next 5 years.
-Not purchase any NHL-related merchandise, jerseys, etc. for the next 5 years.

The home page for the site is very simple. It has:
(1) A form for fans to fill out where they agree to the pledge and they indicate how many games they estimate they have attended in the last 5 years and the amount they estimate they have spent on merchandise in that time.
(2) It has a large number on the top banner that uses the information given by fans to let owners/players know how much the NHL is going to lose over the next 5 years if it doesn't figure something out soon.
(3) It has a list of the number of fans by team that will not be going to games the next 5 years.
(4) It has a running list of the new persons signing up (like a news bulletin announcing new pledges).

That's it. Put the dollar amount out there. Let them know they won't just spring back from this. I'm fucking sick of these fucks being unable to figure this out.

Good idea?

Good idea? Sure. Will it happen? Probably not. 5 years too long for a real fan to not go. Plus I hope "lockout" is your term, this isn't a lockout, more of a boycott.

Ive said it before ... Im done buying tickets ... I dont think i can ever say never but this season is definitely done ... Our entertainment spending budget has gone elsewhere ... Ill watch the game on tv when it returns and consume the media coverage and thats it

This is a gate driven league and its the only way we can voice our displeasure. Hit them in their wallets. I dont understand how someone can be so upset with the 2 sides and consider just giving them their hard earned money so easily when play returns

They are totally taking advantage of our love of the game

Agree with all of that. No league is as dependent upon ticket sales as the NHL. I can't resist watching on TV and not being involved at al, but I can say I'm not going to games for awhile and I'm not gonna buy a jersey b/c of the disrespect you've shown to me, the fan. And while baseball and football don't have to worry the fans will come back.... hockey does! Their seat at the American sports' table is FAR from reserved. They'd be well advised to remember that.

because they already have my fucking money they gave no option to get your money fully back. I could get the games that get cancelled refunded but if I cancel my tickets I still LOSE $1000 on the deposit. they wouldn't give that back. Im quite disgusted by it all.

this would never ever happen but even as a sacrifice of your ticket cost i would love to see a game sold out and then the teams show up and not one single fan goes to the game. yes all would lose their cash for that one game but the silence and emptiness would be louder than anything ever. I think it would be epic

Well that could make for an interesting law suit.

Curious they don't want to keep the contracts they've already signed with players, but are not willing to return deposits for tickets to games that don't even exist.

And this is yet another reason I am on the players side here.

Im totally on the players side for the overall reason of why this is so fucked up. but god damn it I hate them both for how its being done.

I don't know guys, the Florida Panthers have had a fan lockout going strong for about 15 years, and it hasn't done jack shit.

The idea sounds great, but let's be honest...if we come out of a lockout and any one of us has our team looking they're going to win the Cup, will you really still ignore it?

I'd love to say that I'd boycott the whole thing, but I know damned well that if the Sabres made the finals I'd be lining up to try to get tickets still.

That is why I love rooting for teams that have no shot of making the Finals, or a deep playoff run (or the playoffs for that matter). No need to even contemplate it for me.

I'm a value hunter, unless I get a hell of a deal, I won't attend any event, much less at playoff prices. Sure, the atmosphere is awesome, but at those prices, the costs are just too steep.

Like I said earlier, unelss the Ducks offer 5 dollar tickets, I'm not going to an NHL game when they come back. And most likely that isn't happening, so I'll just watch on tv when it fits into my schedule.

I think this lockout is going to hurt the NHL more than Bettman & the players realize. The last time was tough. This time is going to be BRUTAL.

Agreed. I think the only way they can minimize some of the damage is to sign this one as a very long term deal. If they sign a 5 year deal or something like that, the fans are all (rightfully) going to be hesitant to go all in because there's a very likely chance it's gonna happen again in 5 years.

Another thing to consider as well is everytime a new CBA has come up under Bettman there's been a lockout. He's lousy at getting deals done when it matters most.

Yeah, that was kinda what I was going for.

If we get a 5 year deal, it's gonna happen again, because Bettman will still be around.

But if we get a 10 or 12 year deal, things could be different.

in my case, I didnt say anything about ignoring it ... I said Im not paying for it

Im like you esls in that Im a value hunter but I never went as far as just not going to games because of high prices as the outright reason.

now the nhl/nhlpa has made this decision for me ... Im not bending over for and asking to have another from them anymore ... even if my team makes a playoff run

You can count me in. I've already said without a minimum of a 10% rollback on ticket prices across the board (which we all know will never happen), I'm not spending a damn dime on the NHL. I've ben happy to get my hockey fix from other avenues....AHL, CHL, hell my son's bantam travel team, etc.

Of course I live in the DC area, so it's easy to say this with no NHL team here
