rightly or wrongly, I always assume that people wearing unrelated jerseys (that aren't specifically trolling - like the many Bruins jersey fans that showed up out of the woodwork at both home and away Canuck games early this past season) are new to the sport.
"hey look, this is hockey related, I can wear this one!"

could be because the rink that i saw a shit-ton of unrelated jerseys at was Phoenix last year.

This might be a dumb question but...
I am going to Game 3 of the Finals and was wondering if there was any protocol for wearing your teams gear at a Finals when they didnt even make the playoffs? I know I am going to get a bunch of crap for wearing my Canadiens jersey (though in LA they might not even know that the Canadiens beat them last time with all the InstaKing fans), but was wondering if there was some kind of Etiquette when it comes to this?

Well first off, if you are going to "the Finals", you're off to the NBA.

The better rule in my opinion would be to wear whatever the heck you want (AS LONG AS YOU ARE DECENT IN PUBLIC). Is it ideal to wear, say, Sharks gear for a Rangers/Panthers contest? Probably not, but you paid your dues when you bought a ticket. So the Habs aren't in the finals; it doesn't mean you support them any less, and at least the other folks know you are a hockey fan, doubly so since you are willing to buy tickets to games not involving your team.

The only two rules in my mind are:

A) If you aren't wearing an opposing jersey, you should probably cheer for the home team at the game. Less likely to get beaten up by drunks that way (If you ARE wearing an opposing jersey, be on good behavior, though you still might get beaten up by drunks anyway).

B) Don't wear non-hockey jerseys for teams that aren't playing or in the same city/region. So a Lakers jersey to a Kings/Devils game would be fine, but a Packers jersey for the same game not so much.

eww i hate when people do that.. its a hockey game, not a football/basketball/baseball game.. you can root for all the teams in your city, but wearing a lakers jersey to a kings game just screams "hey i joined the bandwagon, i'm cool now right?"

the year after the Crosby draft, the RBC center would get flooded with Steelers Jerseys and terrible towels along with the #66 jerseys when Pitt came to town.

They've all bought #87 or #71 since. :D Now it's #87 everywhere you look (a lot of transplants here). But the Steelers jerseys used to drive me nuts.
They still bring the damn towels though, which is just silly. Crazy Pittsburgh bastards.

I still say, if you can't support the home team, and aren't supporting the away team... but still go to the game... just go neutral. Don't try to make a point of saying "I'm a hockey fan, I just don't like either of THESE teams. I just got tickets from a friend/work. but I really root for these guys. So don't be shocked when i don't cheer." Always comes off a little dick-ish, regardless of intentions.

I think the only exception to that rule is if you can go off the beaten path. Wearing a Lightning sweater to a Blues-Preds game? Weird. Wearing an SEL, Olympic, Whalers, Nordiques, AHL, OHL, or college hockey jersey to an NHL game? No problem.

I don't even think my head could fit through my Whalers jersey anymore.

Jeff should become a Rangers fan, those jerseys have the laces in the front for huge heads.

Paraphrasing Johnny Cochran..

If the jersey don't fit, you must cheer for the Bruins

You wear a Habs shirt to the Kings finals you are more likely to get booed than if you wear a Devils jersey. Most Kings fans are still upset that the Habs cheated by measuring all the Kings sticks before game two. Until the Kings win a cup no Canandien or Canadian team will. That is the true curse of the stick.
