@smitchcd Puck-rakers: #CBJ fire four amateur scouts in the hours after NHL Draft: http://SportsHoopla.com/KtxZqa

That's...wow. The dust hasn't settled, and four scouts gone.

Not surprising. They've been on thin ice since Filatov.

Jackets recently moved Tyler Wright up and brought Chris Clark on in the scouting dept. The knock is, and has been, not enough "hockey people" in the organization. It's why they are chasing Davidson so bad.

I thought the Jackets had a solid draft. I actually like the back to back goalies in the 2nd & 3rd rounds. They needed to bolster that area. In Murray they added another solid piece to what is already a good defense corps.

Feel free to take every scout the Isles have.

"We just felt it was time to change the direction of the scouting staff," Howson said.

They scout the players not draft them. If the guy in charge doesn't like the players shouldn't a move like this be made well before the draft? Sounds like someone is throwing others under the bus to save their own ass. Close the barn door before the horses get out.

Something seems strange here.

It just seems weird to do moments after the draft.

It sure does pix. It doesn't make sense at all.

I actually think it does. It wouldn't have made sense to fire them in March or April when all other leagues are wrapping up. You bring in new scouts for the draft and they've barely had a chance to watch anybody. By firing the scouts now, Howson has time to pick out exactly who he wants as the new scouts and get them in before the various leagues around the world start up again in September.

PR wise it's just weird timing. Obviously you don't do it before the draft, not enough time.

My guess would be that the scouts knew they were going to be let go before the draft. They came to an agreement that they would continue working through the draft (which probably netted them all a nice bonus) and then were let go after the draft was over. If they knew there was no need to stretch it out.

I agree. This is VERY weird. If you don't like the work they are doing, wouldn't you make this change months before the draft to try to get some better help to prepare for it. And four all at once? If I'm the owner, I'm wondering what the hell is going on.

They need to move on from Howson.

CBJ wouldn't want disgruntled ex-scouts out there with the team's draft list, before the draft.
it kind of shoots them in the foot for this year, but doesn't allow other teams to also shoot them in the foot.

What better way to fool other teams into drafting players above their value than firing your awful scouts well before the draft and making other GMs second-guess themselves while you re-mold. ;)

They need to move on from Howson.

They all had contracts that expire June 30, apparently. So it was not a surprise to them either. They have gotten better in the last few years (Johansen, Atkinson, Moore, Savard, and Murray) but they had some MAJOR stinkers in years past. They were convinced that Filatov and Brule were studs, and convinced management of it. Picard too... blech.

Anyone with Internet access and a Russian translator saw Filatov was a flake. They took him several spots before he was expected to go on the word of the scouts. "No, Scott, the rest of the hockey world is WRONG".

The conspiracy theory running around here is that Davidson has agreed in principal to come and he will oversee the development program from scouting to all levels of the minors. He'll put his people in place. He just has to wait for his lawyers to get his owed money from St Lou.

Oh, and Howson has also said he wants two more goalies... "pro" goalies.

Offer to Hedberg, and trade for Lehner, Bishop or Bernier?

And it has come out that Ottawa is not on Nash's list. Sooooo... Boone Jenner for Lehner?

But yes, they need to boot Howson too. He was allowed to announce the picks, but this draft was all Craig Patrick.

True 43 but as they say "The puck stops here" It just seems that the guy's down the ladder seem to be the first to fall.

I agree with you that Howson needs to go.
