i dont see how he is inconsistent ? i see how he makes others better and perhaps they arent stepping up ?

i dont know but if he gets 13-15 sacks will that change your mind ?

One could argue that one sign of inconsistency from Rak is the total number of sacks in NFCE games or any big game. I think that number is zero. I could be wrong, but if it's not zero, it's very low. He tends to have huge games against teams like the raiders and then does nothing against Dallas or any nationally televised game.

Possibly because our NFCeast foes tend to game plan against him? Just a thought.

I was a bit off base. Just checked. He has 11.5 sacks against NFCE teams over his career. Only one against Dallas. Could be game planning. You think opponents game plan against clay Matthews? Or Von miller? Or Mathias? I'm sure they do, but those guys find a way to beat the scheme regularly.

Those guys tend to have a bit more help on their rosters as well. Imagin what rak could do if he were'nt dropping back into coverage 25% of the time, or facing double teams on 30-50% of the time he actually does rush the passer.

In RAKs defense, he has never been turned loose like those guys. Clay Matthews comes from all over the field. So does Von. I'm hoping this year we give him a lot more autonomy in getting after the QB.

I recognize this. Thats why I prefaced my original post as "one could argue".

But let's not let Rak completely off the hook. He's been in the league for 5 years and still hasn't developed an effective second move. That's on him. In watching he highlight tapes of Murphy, he has a bunch of different moves already.

Ok, I figured I could do some research.
Here are his 10 sacks from this year, and the rough time frame in which they occurred(might be a minute off)

Green Bay Packers at 6:06 left in 1st Quarter.
Oakland Raiders at 13:30 left in 1st Quarter.
Oakland Raiders at 2:58 left in 3rd Quarter.
Minnesota Vikings at 14:00 left in 1st Quarter.
Philadelphia Eagles at 0:20 left in 2nd Quarter.
Philadelphia Eagles at 6:20 left in 3rd Quarter. 1/2 sack
San Francisco 49ers at 13:00 left in 1st Quarter.
New York Giants at 7:54 left in 1st Quarter.
New York Giants at 4:25 left in 3rd Quarter.
Atlanta Falcons at 12:00 left in 2nd Quarter.
Atlanta Falcons at 0:15 left in 3rd Quarter. 1/2 sack

The first half totals are. 7 sacks
The 2nd half totals are. 3 sacks

Dang, 3 of his sacks were pretty much to start the game.

One could conclude that teams adjusted in games to neutralize Rak and he, or the coaching staff, never countered. Of course we need to realize that in many of these games we fell behind big early and our opponents played conservatively the rest of the game, minimizing sack opportunities.

Back on topic of what to expect from Murphy.... Just what I said before the draft someone to contribute and I'm pretty sure he will. I'm indifferent on Rak he's good I like him and want him to resign but if he wants a kings ransom good luck elsewhere as I'm in the pay Kerrigan first camp as IMO he is more valuable for this team than Rak.

Sometimes decisions are made in football solely on finances. The Redskins have two positions get paid a lot of money and that is OLB and WR. Over the next year or two financial decisions will have to be made, if not at those positions then somewhere else so the can continue to pay those 5 players nearly 1/3 of the cap. It is not always about how good you are.

Nothing against Trent Murphy, but it seems the 'skins have made a statement with picking him at 34.
Rak, you're gone after this year...unless you get 16+ sacks and are willing to be underpaid.
This guy AGAIN, has not had the benefit of elite teammates, and after his rookie season has been the focal point of teams. I will say...although he's been a great player, I too expect more this season.

I disagree. I think Trent was brought in not only as an insurance policy in case Rak doesn't take the next step but also as another weapon even if Rak does. If Rak gets 14+ sacks, I think he will get his payday from the skins and will be locked up to us for the next 5 years. You don't let elite OLBs in their prime years walk. Those, you pay. But Rak has no excuses this year. He has great talent all around him to take the pressure off and he will have a freer scheme to allow him to rush the passer with more aggression this year. If he doesn't produce at an elite level this year, we will probably give him an offer he will not be happy with and he will probably walk. Which is OK in this case.

This is my take as well. I see the Trent pick as an eye towards the future, with the current upside of more options on pass rushing packages.

i dont think rak has made ANY excuses . the guy is our best defender period and his career has been as good as anyone's

i like the murphy pick , i think he can be a productive player for us .

in my mind it wont matter if he has "16 sacks " or not because this is about economics with some fans and nothing to do with ability

this guy opens things up for others . his pressures , hits , drawn penalties , mean nothing to some ion the fan base .

i think he is worth a step below a mathews in terms of cash he should be paid as a top 8 OLB as he has been for most of his career

Rak may not have made excuses, but skinemall did for him in his post. That's what I was responding to.

rak is 27, his best years are now and the next 4ish years. sign him until trent murphys rookie contract is up, so like 4 years because of the 5th year option (includes this year). and then when hes 32 let him walk and some other team can overpay for a 32 year old big name player that is nearly past his prime. letting your best defensive player walk when he is 28 isnt smart. let him walk in his 30s.

Murphy was not a first rounder, so no 5th year option. BUt I do agree they need to just get Rak resigned already and quit dickin around or this time next year we will be saying what Pass Rushing OLB are we going to take in the first round.

If someone offers a 1st round pick for RAK this year do we trade him?
