Disney is losing ESPN subscribers by the millions

"Confirming what some on Wall Street have been suspecting for a while, Walt Disney Co. has revealed that it lost three million subscribers to its sports network ESPN within one year.

The ESPN faithful are down to 92 million as of the fiscal year ended Oct. 3., Disney DIS, +0.61% said in a regulatory filing dated Wednesday. That compares with 95 million for fiscal year 2014, and 99 million for 2013. It also brings customer numbers back to where they were 10 years ago, a level of 92 million for 2006.

In August, Chief Executive Robert Iger revealed the sports powerhouse channel had experienced “some subscriber losses.” Wall Street punished Disney shares after the media giant said its cable business — which is largely driven by ESPN — would see operating income growth in the “mid-single digits”. That was a step down from a previous forecast, which saw “high single digit” income growth between fiscal 2013 and 2016.

But that dimmer outlook from Disney was partly the reason that media stocks got hit hard in the summer. In its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report in November, the company posted a 7.3% rise in profit, but disappointed on the revenue side.

The Mouse House isn’t alone in its subscriber struggles, though. Time Warner Inc. TWX, +0.66% revealed sliding cable TV membership numbers earlier this month.

Nielsen data has revealed that subscription growth for ESPN has been waning since 2011. Disney pays around $2 billion a year for NFL football games and will pay $1.4 billion to the NBA starting in 2016. Both of these deals have raised analyst concerns about whether the company is paying too much.

ESPN subscribers paid just over $6 each on average a month for the service in 2014. Based on that, the loss of 3 million subscribers in one year would be taking around $216 million away from Disney’s coffers."

They are moving away from the "E" part of their name.
Not much fun to watch anymore.
Gameday has it's moments but 3 hours is way too long anymore for that.

I got ESPN the mag (which comes with Insider) for 2 years. Just expired earlier this month/late last month and I didn't renew it. Not worth it even with the 50% off they were offering. Can find everything somewhere online and I honestly only got it for insider access which was a complete waste of money.

Same here, I thought "10 bucks for a year of magazines and a year of insider sounds great". Two months in im already tired of the magazines because the articles are garbage, and I think I've read all of three insider posts. I am definitely not renewing.

The only direct financial support of pro sports I make is going to MLB games and annual MLB.tv subscription. Just a few years ago I had every sports channel and package available and went to tons of NFL and NBA games. No mas!

I'm sure having Tessitore and Galloway on as their College football Final show will really boost their ratings!

yes, when they keep touting Travis Hiney as an Insider, I know not to waste my money on that deal.

That dude claims he's a sports reporter/journalist, yet he's just a hack.

They're not struggling. Revenue is up significantly.
The model in the future is going to be on demand so it will be interesting to see how everyone adjusts. Some will become like Netfix and some will go the way of Blockbuster.

I pay $25 a month pretty much specifically for ESPN/SEC network.

Technically only $5 of that is for ESPN/SEC and I do watch the other channels I pay the $20 for. But the biggest catalyst to me cutting cable was because my cable company didn't even offer the SEC Network.

I wonder if the drop isn't from people cutting cable overall.
