Don't get me wrong I love Goldson but a majority of his underneath game was after the fact. I'm not that enamored with injury hits and 15 yard penalties.

I agree with you Ray.. big hits are one thing, 15 yard penalties are another... but this usually means the player caught the ball. Also Goldson is more of a SS not FS. The 9ers need a true deep man to help keep them from getting burned deep. Reed will do a better job of this.

Ill take a cheaper Reed than overpaying for Goldson all day. Smarter player, can make teammates better.

I hope this is true. As long as we don't over pay for him. We still need to draft a Safety and maybe consider another Safety in FA as well if we plan on releasing Whitner. I don't dislike Whitner as much as some of you, though.

Man.. my GF will be pissed if this is the case. I won't tell her about this until tomorrow. She's a Ravens fan and was unhappy about the Boldin trade already today, haha

55 solo for Goldson
49 solo for Reed

3 ints for Goldson
4 ints for Reed

11 PDs for Goldson
16 PDs for Reed

Reed with a busted shoulder

And there are people saying Reed is washed up? Haha the guy is still one of the best at his position. He had more INT's then Goldson last year and only 6 less tackles? yea he so washed up....NOT

He gambles a lot and makes some mistakes and isn't a very good tackler over all. That being said, he can make tackles when he needs to and is a smart player

Reed with a busted shoulder

Has his busted shoulder healed? If so, is he more susceptible than Goldson to get it reinsured? If not, can it get much worse, or is a busted shoulder a busted shoulder? To illustrate my question, if a one legged man was the fastest one legged man, I still wouldn't take him over a two-legged man who can beat him, though I'd be more impressed with the one-legged.

Having said that, it sounds like Reed had more success by two of those stats. I don't know much about defense, so I don't know the context to shape those numbers adequately or enough about our scheme, their scheme, respective oppositions, etc. For example, Alex Smith had a 70% completion percentage, doesn't mean he's the most accurate QB in the league.

Reed's been near the top of my free agent target list pretty much since the Super Bowl, I always figured he'd still have a couple of good years left in him.

Plus, he can return punts so no need to sign Cribbs and wasting a roster spot. Keep training LMJ, KWill and whoever they end up drafting for the role and have Reed make the returns if the youngin' aren't ready.

Reed will be 35 for the majority of the season. If we do add him (which I question), I wouldn't want him returning punts.

The issue with Goldson is he's not strong in coverage which wouldn't be a problem except for the fact Whitner is even worse in coverage.

So having two of the same type of Safeties that are big hitters but mediocre in coverage is redundant.

Ideally we would love to have Goldson over Whitner and pair Goldson with a coverage Safety but it's just not the way things worked out.

So I don't have a problem with not signing Goldson for the money he's likely to command and signing Reed as long as we draft a Safety with strong coverage skills.

Reed would make a fine 2 year guy while we get whoever we drafted up to speed.

I like Goldson a lot.. dont get me wrong.

But was it me, or does he get a lot of stupid 15 yard penalties called against him in critical times of the game? I can think of two that killed us last year.

Yes, Goldson got a lot of PF penalties it seemed. He was late a few time hitting the pile and some helmet to helmet..and a few questionable hitting a defenseless reciever PF breakups (marginal calls).

If he stays healthy sure. Otherwise an UDFA from this years draft would be better than Reed.

Haha no way in hell. Ed Reed had a bum shoulder last year and had a better season then Goldson who wants big $, so sorry that arguement doesnt hold water. Ed Reed even injured is better then most
