Ed Reed hires agent, could be headed to 49ers

Receiver Anquan Boldin may not be the only Ravens player who joins the 49ers.

A league source with extensive knowledge of the current safety market believes that the 49ers could land Ravens safety Ed Reed.

As Albert Breer of NFL Network first reported on Twitter (as best we can tell), Reed has indeed hired David Dunn of Athletes First. Now that Reed has an agent, the agent can talk to teams in advance of the start of free agency at 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

The fact that Reed is in play for the Niners means that Dashon Goldson isn’t. Goldson is expected to be the hottest free agent on the safety market. Reed may not be the hottest, but he may be the next big name to join one of the hottest teams in the league.

Well, the FS position has officially been downgraded if this is true. That means CB & SS need an upgrade.

I agree he is not as good as Goldson, he is close enough> Hopefully now they will draft a SS release Witner and use Reed to mentor Culliver to become the FS of the future

You don't think Reed is better in coverage than Goldson? He played last season with a busted shoulder by the way.

If he signs for more than 1 year and more than 4 million, I'll be pissed.

That's my exactly point. The guy doesn't have much tread left on the tires.

He might not be washed up like Moss was, but he's close.

He still has 2 good seasons I'd say if like two year contract. He still can make plays definitely not the hitter. But he's better cover than dashon

We only need 1 season from the chap. Let him play next year and groom his replacement.

I'd rather sign Goldson to a long term contract than rent a broken down Ed Reed for a year or two. Reed had trouble staying healthy when he was in his prime. Goldson is probably the best FS in the league right now. I don't see why we don't cut Whitner and lock Goldson up.

Matt Maiocco ‏@MaioccoCSN

RT @ProFootballTalk Ed Reed could be next Raven to defect to 49ers. > His new agent, David Dunn, has also represented Harbaugh & Baalke.

Reed may/might be as good as Goldie in coverage - but he is nowhere near as good in the underneath game.

Don't get me wrong I love Goldson but a majority of his underneath game was after the fact. I'm not that enamored with injury hits and 15 yard penalties.

Heck it wasn't even the under neath stuff that killed us either. We will get less penalties and force more turnovers I'd say just my opinion.

Well, at least the name "Reed" on the back of the jersey should help the Niners out in the penalty department.
