They must work. The Saints and The Niners didn't seem phased by the crowd noise using them. Sure they lost. But they lost by a lot more without them. 12th Man may be irrelevant.

The Saints even said they were useless. What part of 16-1 says irrelevance? 11 false starts and 3 missed kicks by one team?

It's clear the crowd in Seattle has more of an effect on the game than most other places.

Perhaps all the teams should try it. Getting plays off for the Niners seemed more effective this time around. I thought the Saints benefited from it, but I guess I'm wrong.

Well they decided to make them optional for round two, which was a game they were much more competitive in, so I'd say they were a non-factor at best.

It's not like getting plays in for the Niners was solely a Seattle issue either. I saw more than a few instances late in the season where SF had to burn timeouts early and often against other teams. They were much better at controlling the clock and their timeouts yesterday. That was probably something they addressed more-so than an effect of earplugs.

Like I said, perhaps all teams that play there should try it. Then we can test some theories. Not like the NFL banned earplugs, yet.

You can always try it, but so far that's two teams in a row that have both used them and it didn't change the outcome.:suds:

True. Crowd noise is just the tip of the iceberg when you have a great team.

I worked in audiology for a over a decade and curious to know if the earplugs effectively block off crowd noise frequencies. I guess it's a personal thing.

Well you probably know more about the acoustics than we do then. I heard a few years ago that QBs say "hutt" more than "hike" because crown noise is a high frequency and "hutt" is heard more easily through it.

I also wonder about the effect of anything in your ears. It always seems to me that all I can hear is myself talking and breathing. I use em when I go shooting and while it drowns out the outside noise a lot, it's not like I can hear other voices well above the sound of gunfire.

:noidea:

In terms of football, there's no better subjects than the players.

Didn't Seattle have more false starts in the game? Niners didn't seem phased by the noise at all. No wasted timeouts all game

There was that 3rd and 1 delay of game penalty. That wasn't exactly good...

Agreed. I think the 49ers debunked the "12th Man" myth. They had no trouble getting the plays called. What gave them trouble was the talented Seahawk defense. Those guys may be classless bitches but they can play!

That's what I'm thinking. Pretty sure all teams will at least try it.

We really took the hawks crowd out real early. Especially with that first fumble play and 10-0 lead.

Of course they got it back in that 4th qtr.
