I like that the draft choices and expanded rosters create competition. Let the players who want it more earn it. These veterans who have gotten fat and lazy now have 10 extra guys shooting for their jobs and extra time to beat them out.

Agreed. Allowed more time to see what some of these guys can do instead of having to simply rely on a veteran because of being a known quantity.

I would like to see them keep all the draft picks on the roster at least for a year to see how they do. We have seen we have average backups in many positions, so lets replace them with the yound blood and see how we do.

I can only see one player surviving on our practice squad throughout the year and that is Herron. I think he will be better than Peerman. I have always liked Herron, thought he was very under used and under valued at OSU. He plays much faster than his 40 times shows.

Anyways, i think we are gonna have to go drastic on the roster as I think we have to add everyone to the roster to make sure they do not get snatched from us.

Its going to interesting to see how the final roster is put together. If they only keep 8 D-line, with 4 DE's and 4 DT's, I can see Geathers getting cut with Still moving to DE to back up Dunlap. If they keep 10 DB's, with 4 safeties, that leaves 4 players (Newman, Jones, Prater and Ghee) vying for 2 spots behind Leon Hall, Jason Allen, Dre Kirkpatrick, and Nate Clements. All I know is these guys better come in ready to work or they won't be here long.

What's not to love about that?

Also...you KNOW that a handful of these guys are going to have some type of season ending/nagging injury prior to the season.

Competition is beautiful thing and "having to cut talented players" is a good problem to have.

I agree. We should have quality depth at many positions even with injury or cuts.

There are 5 guys we cannot afford to lose to injury no matter what in my opinion.

Dalton, Green, Whitworth, Atkins, Howard

Those 5 dudes have to stay healthy all season long. I know Atkins is coming from a position of ridiculous strength, but he is a difference maker up front. He is what is putting our DL over the top and into the category they are being listed at.

I still see Jeromy Miles (16) and Cedric Peerman (13) making the roster as they were the top two tacklers on special teams last season and even though Tate was the leading kick and punt returner the drafting of not one but two Wide Receivers may signal the end of his brief tenure as a Bengal as that duty may fall to Adam Jones who handled both duties for the Titans in '05 and '06.

RB - BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Bernard Scott, Brian Leonard, Cedric Peerman

An interesting article though I have a hard time believing Pat Sims gets sent packing.

Notable Cuts / Practice Squad Members

DT Pat Sims: Sims has struggled to stay healthy during his tenure in Cincinnati. He’s a solid run-stuffer but is the odd man out with the arrival of two rookies at the position.

DE Derrick Harvey: Harvey ends up cut as there is simply not enough room on the roster.

WR Brandon Tate: Now that the Bengals have enough depth at corner, Adam Jones can go back to being the primary kick and punt returner. Tate is cut as a result.

LB Vontaze Burfict (PS): Burfict is known for his issues, but he’s a sound player. There are too many good linebackers on the roster already, but he’ll find a home on the practice squad until he gets his chance a few years from now.

TE Colin Cochart (PS): Cochart played well in limited time last year. Unfortunately for him Orson Charles is better and Donald Lee hasn’t retired yet. He’ll land on the practice squad.

WR Ryan Whalen (PS): Whalen won’t get a chance this year because of the arrival of two rookies but he’ll land softly on the practice squad and await his opportunity.

QB Zac Robinson (PS): Robinson is a solid backup quarterback prospect who is a nice insurance policy for the Bengals.

S Robert Sands (PS): Sands hasn’t developed to the point of being a backup on the roster just yet. He’s still a few years out, if at all.

RB Dan Herron (PS): Unless Herron is amazing on special teams, he isn’t beating out Cedric Peerman for the fourth spot.

CB Shaun Prater (PS): Prater won’t make the roster this year thanks to all the veterans in front of him. He’ll be a huge contributor the year after.

CB Brandon Ghee (PS): Ghee has shown flashes of ability but is now buried by veterans and rookies alike.

PS = Practice Squad

I've also been hearing that if the Bengals cut a DT this season, it could be Sims. Also a lot of talk that if a CB is cut, it could be Clements as early as June.
