Early 53 man roster projections

This is the problem I have with the Bengals draft. We doubled up at positions that were strengths and the players who fail to make the roster will probably not clear waivers to make it to the Practice Squad. Breakdown is based on past roster compositions. I also have a feeling Geathers gets cut with Still moving to DE.

Tate will likely be cut. Whalen will likely be cut. Geathers will likely be cut. One of the veteran corners will be cut. One or two of the regulars will be on IR (random injury) or PUP (Leon Hall) to begin the season. Jones, Iloka, and Prater will be on the 53.

I believe I mentioned that when I stated, "We doubled up at positions that were strengths and the players who fail to make the roster will probably not clear waivers to make it to the Practice Squad." The reason why I put Tate over Jones is because Tate was our leading kick and punt returner and there is no one on the roster to replace him. Jones returned punts in college but never returned kicks and the last WR spot is going to come down to special teams. With that being said I highly doubt he clears waivers. And Whalen was on the active roster all year last season and is not eligible for the practice squad.

"One of the veteran corners will be cut", ok, which ones? Step out on that ledge and make a call. The pup is only for the first 6 weeks of the season, even if Hall starts the season there a roster spot will eventually have to be cleared for his return. And the reason why I have Jeromy Miles over George Iloka is due to special teams. Miles was the Bengals leading special teams tackler last season.

Lol... you and your brother love to throw out absolutes even though the track record hasn't been very good thus far. And I doubt Shipley, who's returning from injury, will be risked returning kicks.

Brandon Tate will be an interesting story. In year's past it seemed that Marvin used returners that had other roles on the roster (B. Scott, Keiwan Ratliff, Tab Perry, etc.)..... Tate was one of the first guys that I can remember that was brought in to be the punt AND kick returner and do nothing else. I'm not sure if we'll continue to see that trend. The kick-return game has been largely marginalized due to rule changes. Tate had two explosive returns at key moments last year, but otherwise was completely underwhelming as a returner. I wonder if Baby Hawk or one of our corners could step in.

I doubt Shipley will be used to return punts. As August mentioned, he's coming back from another knee injury (he had a fairly serious one in college). I think he'll be count on to help improve our third down percentage and I don't think they want to subject him to the hits on special teams.

Either way there's going to be a surprise cut at WR, D-line and CB.

That was just a though. Regardless, they just drafted Jones, a guy who was a 3rd round talent, and highly thought of as one of the steals of the draft. They're not going to try and slip him onto the practice squad. They tried that with a WR and it didn't work out. Jones will be there. I don't speak for my brother's accuracy, but I don't speak in absolutes often, and not unless I'm sure.

I see Tate gone and Whalen to the PS. Newman cut, and probably Harvey cut. I could also see a surprise move like cutting Sims.

Newman seems like one of those guys that Marvin will have a man-crush on. He'll probably start and get beat like a drum all season. Our only hope is he gets hurt.

I think we'll cut PacMan Jones.

Neither Tate or Whalen are eligible for the Practice Squad. Tate has been in the league for 3 yrs and Whalen was on the active roster all season.

Each NFL team may keep up to eight members on its "practice squad" in addition to the 53-member main roster. They consist mostly of rookies who were cut in training camps and borderline NFL-caliber players. Both rookies and young veterans are eligible for the practice squad. However, a player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons, or if he has accrued a year of NFL experience (six or more games on a club's 53-man active roster or official Injured Reserve list.)

Its going to interesting to see how the final roster is put together. If they only keep 8 D-line, with 4 DE's and 4 DT's, I can see Geathers getting cut with Still moving to DE to back up Dunlap. If they keep 10 DB's, with 4 safeties, that leaves 4 players (Newman, Jones, Prater and Ghee) vying for 2 spots behind Leon Hall, Jason Allen, Dre Kirkpatrick, and Nate Clements. All I know is these guys better come in ready to work or they won't be here long.

I knew Tate wasn't PS eligible. I said he'd be cut. I thought Whalen still was, but was wrong. Regardless, if they were to keep Whalen over Jones, they are morons. Jones will not make the practice squad. He'd be claimed before the paperwork was done.
