if i put myself in the shoes of Dan Hamhuis, why would i sign with a team before July 1st even if they traded for my neg rights. Especially if they are not offering what might be available come July 1st on the open market

kovy isn't near the best player in the league. how does he deserve sid/ov/malkin money? the guy is one dimensional (seriously...not the typical OV/Sid namecalling one D, but the actual one dimensional) and i don't think it's smart for ANYONE to bury themselves like that.

i think kovalchuk will be a disaster for any team. look at what he did to jersey. they were going down hill since they got him. he is selfish also. he is just not worth that money. and why should he be? a 40 goal scorer and point per game player. he should get about 6.5 mil.

I understand you can't compare him to Crosby or Geno or Alex, but I do know that the KHL is offering him somewhere around 12 million for a one year deal. And, in all honesty, I can see a team in the NHL paying him stupid money in the range of 8-8.5 for like 4-5 years.

Do I think he deserves that kind of money? No, but when your spending somebody else's money to sign him its alot easier...

as long as he's willing to play for another non-contender, sure he can have 8-8.5 mil. but he'll notice that the 'big 3' took less money than they could've. i'm not sure about alex, but i know sid and geno were basically given a contract and told 'fill it in'. sid took 8.7 (go figure) and geno took the same number knowing he shouldn't get more than sid, but certainly deserved the same amount. even alex (who is highest paid) easily could've gotten more. i'd love having that shot on my team...but for about 6 mil.

Backstrom signed for 6.4 and he is a much better all around hockey player than Kovy and quite a bit younger and more durable.

yeah...although IMO that was a steal for backs. but still...as i posted earlier, kovy is not a very good/dedicated two way player. he's more of a typical european flash player.

I agree, I would love to have backstrom on my team. Great player and we could fit him under our cap... hey want connolly?

i think malkin is a bit overpayed when i think about it. i think i would rather have backstrom.

it's...tough. because there are days he's worth every penny. i think even a few 100grand less would be more fair (at least for sid, because even when sid's a bit off he's just of more value in general). the difference, IMO, between the two is that sid gives 100% every game, geno doesn't always...love 'em both, just an observation.

Yea, Malkin was overpaid for what he did last year. But what happens if he goes back to 70+ assist guy? He's worth the money when healthy. Backstrom is a better value for sure, but that's because he's worth Malkin money but getting Briere money.

LeBrun is saying the Oilers made a play fr the #2 pick. Does that mean they wanted to move back, or did they want to have the top 2 picks?

There was a conditional pick involved in the Hamhuis trade. If they don't sign Hamhuis, they get a late rounder from Nashville, I think.
