Down to 3 teams for Stafford

49ers, Colts, and us. I thought our first would do it but apparently its going to cost more. Thoughts?

San Fran holds the best first rounder obviously. If they're going rebuild they may not be terribly interested in expensive veterans.

But if Washington can get him I'd think they'd become the fav to repeat in the East

Dean, pls tell me why you think Mathew Stafford is a good fit in WASH at this current moment? keep in mind he would basically be a 2 year rental, then what? Pls explain Stafford's fit, the plan moving forward to groom his replacement when he leaves and what talent you can put around him this year in order to make the playoffs to have any shot at a SB this coming season and next before he becomes a FA once more. A real plan that will give other fans confidence we are not wasting draft picks on Stafford who at 33 is beginning to decline, as is his mobility as is his years left of service.

Three way trade: Smith to SF, Stafford to WSH, Garoppolo to DET. SF gets draft picks, WSH gets cash considerations, Detroit save on cap. (I don’t know Garoppolo‘s contract.)

I’m not saying my above comment is realistic at all, but how much would Washington have to pay if they traded Smith? I read somewhere last off-season that if he had been traded, it would’ve cost more than cutting. I forgot the details because I knew they wouldn’t do it when he was injured.

His dead cap is like 8 million. With this roster I'd (if it were me) go with a veteran. Doesn't have to be Stafford necessarily but he's the best option that's realistic. I just can't see them piecing together a trade for Watson that competes with other teams.

I'm usually rolling with Dean's thought process even when its unorthodox, but S2W brings up a legitimate question.
Is Stafford really a good fit, especially for what it will cost? I'm not denying Stafford is above average even in his early 30's
but unless he's someone that we could beat the Saints, or Packers with deep in the playoffs, maybe its worth developing a draft pick
or getting a cheaper FA while still building thru the draft. The NFC in general appears to be crumbling before our eyes, while this team appears to be on the rise.

About the only way I see someone wanting Smith is if they think they can get him and a rookie (like the lions would) and have his main focus being making that kid better. But id think the burden of taking on one of (if not the highest) the biggest backup qb contracts in the league would cost extra in draft capital.

If not going with Smith, I’d go with Allen, Heinicke, and draft the best pick you can at number 19 (QB or not), or trade up if QB is in reach that you want.

The reason is that I think that you guys can win the division next year with any of those three quarterbacks, Smith, Heinicke, or Allen. But the window isn’t there to contend unless you got someone better than Stafford.

Or rather, let’s say Allen is in the system already and gets onto the ground running due to familiarity and gets as far as Stafford, who hasn‘t won a playoff game, would.

Let’s say you don’t believe in any of the three: Smith teaches the next guy or Allen maximizes young development by not costing the team in play or money, and all that you would lose in not getting Stafford (first or second round exit) you gain in picks and development (including QB pick maybe).

Smith would start that year and the rookie would sit and learn and get in if there’s an injury. So the cost is the same, but hopefully instead of a high backup pay, they are paying for some starts.

I don't get the hesitation on Stafford from people. The guy is easily a top 10-12 QB and obviously would be far better in a place where he has more talent than he had in Detroit. You've got about a 10% chance of drafting a QB 1st round who ends up a better QB than Stafford and that number of 10% doesn't mean that young guy will be better right away, just eventually.

With our defense we should be in win now mode. If Rodgers, Brees, and Brady retires it makes even more sense. If its a 2 year rental and we get 10-12 wins a year for two years I would take it. He should want to come here. It's the easiest path to the playoffs. You can get him his #1 Wr Galloday in FA. Plus you get get him another weapon in the draft. Do you think Tampa Bay is worrying what to do after T. brady?

Draft picks bust all the time this is a proven QB that can win for us right away. I was for the Alex Smith trade and I am for the Stafford trade.

i was just expressing the same thing in another thread. i agree with using what we've already got and even drafting Lance, im not a fan of him but think he could work in this system, put some FAs around him. I really like Alex Smith but he's gotta be more aggressive and i don't think he'll survive 16 games

The big time QB;s in the NFL are retiring all the more you get Stafford. With our defense we should be in win now mode.
