Shaw is really starting to look like the type of bat that can actually carry a team for an extended period. He looks to be slightly streaky, but when he is hot, forget it.

Not sure he will be up this year, but there is little doubt he should get at least his cuppo by next year.

With this teams hitting whoas, you gotta think he is an untouchable in the system, isn't he?

Another pathetic loss got me wondering what AAA looks like right now. Here's the top five hitters (by OPS) and pitchers (primarily by WHIP but also ERA) in Sacramento:
Top Five Hitters
5. Orlando Calixte - Evidence that this team offers little hope for the big league hitting woes. The number 5 guy has a .729 OPS. At least he plays the outfield.
4. Chris Marrero - A little more evidence not to get too excited about the AAA hitters this year. The first guy to get cast off from the left field merry-go-round has an .802 OPS in 8 games since getting sent down
3. Carlos Moncrief - Could he be the next guy to get left field auditions? Doubtful. Despite an .848 OPS, and a changing cast of characters in the outfield, he still only gets to platoon.
2. Ryder Jones - The one real prospect on this list at least is posting an .850 OPS in 19 games (he spent some time on the dl already this year)
1. Tim Federowicz - Yes, the journeyman catcher is the top hitter on the RiverCats current roster - .889 in 41 at-bats
Top Five Pitchers
5. Kraig Sitton - That 3 lefty relievers populate this list should give some hope if Okert or Osich cannot figure it out. Sitton's numbers have slipped of late, but are still top 5 worthy (3.57 ERA, 1.13 WHIP).
4. Tyler Beede - While his ERA (3.38) is a lot higher than Gregorio's (which gives Gregorio the edge right now, in my mind), he has the same WHIP (1.26) and is close to Gregorio in Ks per 9.
3. Joan Gregorio - A couple of guys (not listed below) may have a better WHIP, but this guy is the best starting pitcher on the team. In 6 starts, he has a 1.87 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. Pretty good for a PCL pitcher.
2. Matt Reynolds - this guy seems to know how to pitch in the PCL. And he wasn't bad, minus one relief appearance, with the Giants last year. A 1.29 ERA and 0.93 WHIP makes it hard not to think about him in the big league bullpen again.
1. Tyler Rogers - the relief prospect a 1.86 ERA and an 0.83 WHIP. Would be nice to see him get a shot soon.

Calixte has speed, already has 9 steals. Not sure how that translates into Noggin's no run offense, but it would be nice to see someone with speed. We just saw what Hamilton did to us with speed. Calixte is not a speed merchant like Hamilton, but he seems to be plenty fast. The plodding "offense" the Giants currently have is severely restricted. It cannot manufacture runs. It cannot get on base, and when it does it cannot drive anyone in.

Funny, the Dogs have 8 runs in 3 innings tonight at Pittsburgh, Giants have 8 runs on the entire road trip so far. Oye!

Calixte seems, to me, a lighter version of Eduardo Nunez (Calixte has a .310 OBP in AAA), and probably a good example of how Bochy would use his speed - he wouldn't.

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

Sacramento River Cats AAA lost 7-6 (11-20) by giving up 6 runs in the 9th.

Mac Williamson 2-4, HR (2), 3 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K. I think the Giants are waiting for him to heat up.
Orlando Calixte 1-5, 1 R, SB (9). Yes, very similar to Nunez, expect he plays very good defense. Played SS tonight.
Jae-Gyun Hwang 2-5, 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI. Played 3B
Fed-X 3-4, 1 RBI, 1 R. Look out Trevor Brown.
Ryder Jones 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB. Played LF. He's looking better out there, from what I've heard. Still think he's going to be Gonnor's replacement (should be at least).
Michael Roth 2-3, 1 RBI. Yes, the pitcher.

Michael Roth 5.2-5-1-1-1-5
Dusten Knight 1.1-0-0-0-0-2. Maybe he'll make some noise after his promotion. Got rocked his first outing, nice bounce back here.
Ryan Webb and Roberto Gomez gave up 3 runs a piece in the 9th.

Richmond Flying Squirrels AA won 3-1 (12-17) by scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th.

Brandon Crawford 1-3, 2B. This guy must be a scrub, he doesn't even have a picture.
Chris Shaw 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI. .315/.425/.539 batting line is dreamy. 1:1 K:BB ratio is dreamy. Get hype.
Slade Heathcott 2-4, 2 SB (3)
C.J Hinojosa 1-4. I threw him in here because this was his season debut. Potential bat-first utility guy.

Jordan Johnson 6.0-2-1-1-3-5. The Jeff Samardjiza of the system right now. Great stuff, good control, bad command. Bullpen: light's out again.

San Jose Giants A+ enjoyed an off-day

Augusta GreenJackets A lost 4-3 (11-20)

Nothing notable here frankly.

Just realized my date for yesterday was wrong. It was 5/9 where I live when I posted it....

Tuesday 5/9

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

Sacramento River Cats AAA WON 4-3 (12-20) by walking-off in the 11th

Mac Williamson 1-3, 2-R HR (3), 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB, FE (1st). Homer went 426 to straight-away CF. Soon
Ryder Jones 1-5, 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI, 3 K. Played 1B

Chris Stratton 4.2-6-3-2-2-5. Did not have great command today, but his defense really let him down too. His stuff is really looking much better though than it ever has in his MiLB career. I wasn't a believer, but I may be now.
Kraig Sitton 0.0-0-0-0-2-0. LOL
Tyler Rogers 2.1-3-0-0-0-0. Inherited a bases-loaded jam and got out of it.
Kyle Crick 2.0-0-0-0-1-1
Dusten Knight 2.0-0-0-0-1-1

Cross Rogers and Crick off the list of guys replacing Melancon.

Richmond Flying Squirrels AA WON 14-6 (13-17)

Brandon Crawford 3-5, 1 R. Alright I've come around, maybe the Giants should give this guy a chance.
Slade Heathcott 3-5, 3-R HR (4th), 2B, 5 RBI, 2 R, 1 K. Whew
C.J Hinojosa 1-5, 3 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB. Played 3B and SS. Made a highlight play at 3B. Utility profile.
Miguel Gomez 3-5, 2B, 1 RBI, 2 R, FE (7th, lol). Played 2B. If Wotus can work some magic on this kid, he could be another Sandoval.
Brandon Bednar 3-5, 2B, 1 BB, 1 RBI, 3 R. Played 1B
Chris Shaw 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 R. Played LF. Looked fine. 8th game in LF, 18 games at 1B. 16:15 BB:K ratio :thumb:
Andrew Suarez 0-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB. (Yes, the pitcher)
D.J. Snelten 0-0, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 R. (Yes, the relief pitcher)

Andrew Suarez 6.0-10-4-4-1-3. Not his best day, but got 9 groundball outs, so that's good. FB was around 91
D.J. Snelten 2.0-2-2-0-0-5. This Richmond bullpen is really something. Snelten now has a 22/3 K/BB in 16.2 IP, and if he's not striking you out, you're hitting it into the ground. 3.83 GO/FO ratio is AMAZING (unsustainable).
Rodolfo Martinez 1.0-1-0-0-2-0. Well, there had to be some bad in this game, right?

San Jose Giants A+ lost 8-1 (14-18)

Just........ no. Jake McCasland gave up 6 unearned runs thanks to 3 Ryan Howard errors. Giants only had 1 hit.

Augusta GreenJackets A enjoyed the off-day

Shaw is almost ready with the bat, I think. At this point, he just needs reps and training in left, and I could totally see him as the starter in left by the end of the season.

The thing that is exciting me the most right now is his 13.9% K rate and 13.9% BB rate. I want to see if he can sustain good rates in those categories (it would be A LOT to ask him to sustain the elite pace he's on right now).

And obviously continue to work on his defense.

If he is a bopper, I am not overly concerned with his walk rate. It is nice, but that us an advances part if the game. Make sure he is able to bring a strong OPS based on an above average SLG and I am happy.

At this point, though, I would like to see him play every day in Left. Fast track this kid!

Philosophically, I personally like to see that he's a smart hitter, not hacking at every pitch and getting lucky. We know he has power, but he's showing that he's selective, and waiting for the right pitch to crush, and is okay with it if he doesn't get it. The two, Slugging and OBP, go hand-in-hand. That's going to be especially important if he's playing in the majors and in AT&T.
