They have next-to-no assets any other team would want or give up any futures for, they have the worst farm system in the league, their active roster makes children cry, and like you said they have a goalie that will likely keep them from bottoming out where they should be.

I don't know any team that even comes close to having any of those problems, let alone all of them at the same time.
And a shit ton of cap space

They have assets like a great young defense corp with more guys waiting in the wings. They have a top flight goaltending prospect and guys like Matteau, Boucher, Zacha and Quenneville should all be at the very least 2nd line caliber players. One Kovalchuk like move for a big time player and all of a sudden that's a solid team. There's no "savior" in the system but that doesn't mean there's nobody in the system.

Most of their best "prospects" are at the NHL level anyways and should only get better in the next 2 years. Top 5 goaltender, very high potential blue liners, more cap room than just about any other team, all working in their favor. I'll leave it at that.

That is an incredibly optimistic projection. All four of them have a 2nd line floor? I think if even two of them become adequate 2nd liners that's a huge win.

I was at a briefing Shero gave Tuesday night for about 200 ticket plan holders and he kept smiling when talking about cap room. I'd be surprised if they don't make some major acquisitions over the next 2 years

What are you going to acquire with all that cap space with no assets to trade? And what makes the Devils such an attractive proposition when over the next 5 years about half the teams in the league will, at one point or another, have the same amount of cap space that the Devils will?

Just out of curiosity, what teams do you actually believe have a worse chance of a Cup in the next five years than NJ?

There are these things called draft picks people throw around from time to time to acquire talent. That and a plethora of youthful defenseman. If they have to overpay for free agents then they have to overpay.

Cap space runs out REALLY quickly. Isles had a 'ton of cap space' a few years ago. Once you get good talent on the ice and guys that deserve raises that space dissipates quickly.

[pipe dream]
Strike gold with several consecutive high first round picks
Sign UFA Stamkos
Sign UFA Seabrook
Trade for Shattenkirk's expiring contract at the deadline next year (and re-sign him)
Kovalchuk comes back ...err maybe not, that might be a detriment...
[/pipe dream]

I'd say that would pull them out of the cellar.

And the Isles missed the playoffs just a season ago.

But apparently, all you need is cap space and high draft picks to trade and in no time you'll have the 2000-01 New York Rangers!

So instead of draft and develop, which is the way most good teams become good, you think trading those draft picks for stars other teams don't want anymore is the key to success along with overpaying for the crap that passes for UFA's these days.

I think you and Brian Burke would make a good tandem.

/and you didn't answer my question.

Look, Disco Dan is a capable coach, sure. But I don't think he (or really many coaches) are capable of being big difference makers, to the point of adding wins or something like that. He may be worth an extra win or two over the course of a long season, but he's never really been an X's and O's guy. What I really don't get about putting Buffalo at 28% is that he openly admits it's going to take some time of that 5 year window. Okay, so if you don't see it in the next two seasons, that means you really *realllllly* believe in them in those next few years.

What are they going to give up to get those high priced players? What makes NJ such an appealing free agent destination?

I disagree with some of those teams. Minny should be good again this year. The Jets have a solid team & arguably the best prospect pool in all of hockey. I expect Detroit to have a very good season. Last I checked Datsyuk was still on the roster. I said in another thread the Blue Jackets are my dark horse team & I'm sticking with them. Ottawa is the one team I'm not sure about because of goaltending. I'm not sure who their #1 goalie is.

The Wild are totally reliant on a goaltender who half a good season on his resume (we all saw what happens to the team when they get bad 'tending), the Jets' prospect pool won't help them much this season, Detroit is another work-in-progress and both their defence and goaltending are huge question marks, and your Ottawa quote could apply to 4 of the 8 teams on the list.

I can't really argue with any of his groupings thus far.
