Malkin to the Devils for Travis Zajac, Moose Hedburg and a bucket o pucks

It would take a massive overpayment for Shero to trade Malkin or Letang within the division. Malkin does have a no trade clause, but my guess is if they trade him Toronto or Edmonton are possbilities. Toronto needs a #1 Center & Edmonton has a new GM with an itchy trigger finger.

I agree that the Pens don't need to blow it up for performance reasons, but that cap situation suuuuuucks. I think if they have to move somebody, Malkin is a good choice; he's more valuable without Crosby than he is with Crosby.

That said, they'd be nuts to trade him in the division.

By nature of the the rule "whoever gets the best player wins the deal", the Pens won't win any deal if those two are leaving.

Buy out Fleury's remaining two years. If my calculations on capgeek are correct, they buy him out before the end of league business from the '13 season, it would be a saving of $3.8 million for the next two seasons, if it were just a standard buyout. Take that extra 3.8 per and find a goalie to tandem with Vokoun (Emery, Khudobin, M.Smith, Thomas). If they were to use one of the two compliance buyouts, then MAF's cap hit wouldn't have an effect at all for the next two seasons, with a savings of 5 million per.

I think a buyout of Fleury is a very real possibility, provided they can't get someone who is willing to trade for him. Which i don't see as very likely.

This is the thought that's gone through my head quite a bit. The only way I see Fleury leaving is packaged with another big name, ala Letang. Now hear me out, FLEURY IS BETTER THAN A LOT OF GOALIES IN THIS LEAGUE.

If by a lot you mean 6 or 7, I agree with that. ;)

I don't know if "best fit" is what I would say, but I could go with that trade. The only problem is what claude would do with Seguin. He's not a 3rd line player and IMO Claude holds him to a higher standard than half the team. If Seguin got some of the penalties that Marchand or even Looch got in these playoffs, he'd be benched.

The Pens would be stupid to try to move Letang in the off-season. Sure he's a Norris candidate, but every GM in the league just saw him play a horrible series when it counted the most. That's going to overshadow his regular season in every GM's mind and it's going to lower his trade value significantly. However, if he has a good regular season next year, and the Pens aren't successful in re-signing, his value will be very high at the trade deadline.

FLEURY IS BETTER THAN A LOT OF GOALIES IN THIS LEAGUE.

Here's the thing... He isn't.

Going by the yardstick of stopping 90 out of 100 shots being "Good enough" to play in the NHL and the difference between good and great being how many of the other 10 you get to, Fluery is merely good enough. And in most cases, just barely.

08-09 - .908
09-10 - .891
10-11 - .899
11-12 - .834
12-13 - .916 (shortened season, only East teams)

Good enough gets you a backup spot. Good enough is Ty Conklin or Brian Boucher.

Everyone in the league saw Fleury collapse. Everyone saw him get figured out. And everyone (except maybe Lowe) is smart enough to NOT make an offer for him. He'll get picked up around camp by a team who didn't get the guy they wanted. And he isn't going to make much at all. Especially on a team that doesn't have Crosby and Malkin and can expect four goals a game from the forwards.

I agree with your sentiment, but I think you crossed your numbers a bit, with the first 4 being POs and the last being regular season.

Malkin is gonna want a max contract. Bruins will not pay it or at least I hope they dont. I dont want the team in cap jail for 1 "superstar" especially Malkin.

Ah, you are correct. Misread the stat sheet. Thought that last number was a bit high. .883 this year.

Shero will get more value this offseason than he would during next season. The Penguins need to decide if they want one more run at the cup or clean house.

The value would be significantly lower if they wait until next offseason and he's unsigned. I don't think one bad series is going to affect his value more than him being unsigned.
