That would put him at age 45 where he should be playing with the Red Wings by then.

And take a look at this article from a Chicago reporter. Notice he doesn't make mention the 12 year deal Chicago gave Hossa.

… or, maybe not; we’ll see, but New Jersey Devils left wing Ilya Kovalchuk has been offered a 17-year, $100 million deal to re-sign with the team.

No, you are not reading those numbers incorrectly. 17 years. Seventeen. Kovalchuk will be 28 around the time the next NHL regular season ends, so he will be 45 when the deal expires.

Will there even be a National Hockey League in 2027? Maybe that’s the point. The Devils are throwing out a contract this long because they don’t have any idea what will exist 17 years from now.

17 years. Parents of newborn babies reading about this today will be parents of teenagers about to graduate high school when this proposed deal ends.

Happy 2027, Ilya. Wherever you’ll be. (And please. Don’t tell Jim Hendry about this contract.)

What the hell kind of question is that? That's directed at the writer of the article, not IPW.

/After last night, better be sure there's no misunderstandings...

Personally, I don't think the guy gave enough examples of what could happen 17 years from now.

He could of maybe told us how many barrels of oil that would be out in the Gulf, or the fact that the Sabres still haven't won a Cup. Or what new Disney sensation Gagne is stalking.

the league has set the precedent.... anything goes.
Luongo, Ohlund, Hossa, Lecavalier, Zetterberg, all fizzle down to nothing at the end of their deals to reduce the cap hit. some more blatantly than others. NHL has done (and will continue to do) jack-shit.

They could try to limit contract lengths when they renew the CBA, not sure the players association would go for that though. They could also try having something like every year on the contract must have a salary within 20% of the salary in the first year of the contract or some variant on that. I do agree that having Kovalchuk get something like $10M per for 9 years then roughly $1M per for the final 8 when he's not playing (or however the contract would be structured) for a cap hit of under $6M is ridiculous.

The silly thing is these dumbasses locked the players out to control salaries and now look for every loop hole to circumvent THEIR cap. At what point is it going to come to a head, when someone gets a 20 year deal at 34 years old

Guy Lafleur and Gordie Howe would honor that contract!
