Good to see some Tiger baseball today and hear Gibby....he is sounding good..
That's great. Hopefully he's got it down on how to control and live with his situation.

Last year I was worried about him.

He is working with the Tigers in spring training this year on base running. He had some very interesting insights into the base running and how bad the Tigers were at it last year. I am NOT big on statistics or how they figure them out but the Tigers were worst in the league.

Upton needs to find bat. Eight K's and one hit in 13 plate appearances. This is the kind of thing I remember from Upton when he was in AZ. Then he goes on a 3 game tear and gets 9 hits in 12 ABs.

We ran into a crazy amount of outs last year. Not just when attempting to steal (Iggy blows, Gose not much better.) but ridiculous attempts to take the extra base or score.

I'm all for being aggressive on the base paths and forcing teams to make plays. But there is a line and we were far across it last year.

Yikes. Ian Kinsler is already in double-digits for Spring RBIs.

Tigers had a moron at third base coach last year.

Did the Tigers replace Dave Clark as 3rd base coach? I think he is still there?

It is possible that the Atlanta Braves have Phil Coke AND Ian Krol in their bullpen this year. On a positive note.....Rondon did a 1-2-3 in the 9th today, with 2 strikeouts. Looks a little slimmer, maybe down to 260 :)....but the Tigers have another heavyweight reliever in Angel Nesbitt - look like he is up over 250.

Victor Martinez....

Steamer Projections has this for VMart in their predicted 120 game, 2016 season. They use a system that includes the stat totals over several years of his career:
BA: .289
HR: 15
RBI: 67
OBP: .350
OPS: 795

I took VMart's last three seasons...threw out that 2014 freaky season (juice?)....and averaged 2013 and 2015, giving a slight weight advantage to 2013 due to more games played and his health.
BA: .276
HR: 13
RBI: 75+
OBP: .330
OPS: .730

Throwing out the team oriented stat of RBI...I appear a little hard on VMart. But considering that Steamer adds any weight to their projections using VMart's "strange than fiction 2014 season".....I think my numbers are a good goal to set for the 37 year old. (''Older than fuck'' - right Vice?). Could he beat my predictions....sure. In fact - for the good of Cabrera and/or JD Martinez, beating them might be a very good idea.

Interesting note: Steamer predicts a .358 wOBA. That would have put VMart in the top 40 in that category last year! Steamer is predicting a very good, if not great year for the glued together veteran.

I would suggest his 2015 season was equally "freaky", due to the bad left knee. He is a career .300 hitter from both sides of the plate, yet hit only .219 from the left side last year (and about .350 as a righty). I can't argue that the power numbers from 2014 were a weird aberration, but I see considerably better than a .276 BA/.330 OBP this year, assuming no recurrences of his knee issues.

Actually, my concern isn't his BA, but if he can keep his slugging percentage up with doubles and the occasional homer. If he turns into a slap/singles hitter, he clogs up the bases and produces fewer RBI. I would hate to see him turn into a slow-footed Iglesias, batting an empty .300. Batting 4th or 5th, he has to drive the ball in the gaps like he use too. Age is a worry....but I sure hope he has one more year of offense that can justify (partly) that silly contract they gave him.

He has hit the ball well so far this spring and the talk during the game yesterday was he is finally healthy. Gibby said Victor went into the season hurt and it got worse he never really recovered or gained the strength. They showed him swinging yesterday and pushing off the left leg and knee and he legged out a double.... not to say he won't get hurt again but they were impressed with his play so far this spring

Hi Vice. No comment? I know you labeled VMart as one of those "old as fuck" players. Yet...with you being the ultimate homer here, I thought you'd have a positive prediction for Martinez - despite his age and "fuckness".

It's just that you threw out his best season as a pro, yet calculated in his worst (by far). I'd suggest, again if healthy, that he's somewhere in-between on power numbers, and closer to 2014 in BA than 2015.

My guess is vmart should be good for a .300/.340/.440/.840 line with 20+hr and 90+rbi. IF he can stay healthy.
