Anyone for having Pena as the starting catcher and let Avila be backup? Pena gets the ball in play and is getting on base.

I said the same yesterday, kengel -- that Pena should at least be splitting time with Avila. Apparently, Leyland now agrees:

"I don't want to indicate that Alex isn't our catcher because he is, but at some point I have to do something -- sit him down or go every other day for a while. I don't really have the formula just yet in my mind."

On Verlander -- He seems physically okay, it's gotta be something mechanical or maybe a finger thing with his feel. He's not spotting his fastball or his secondary pitches. One good sign is he only had 1 walk last night, so better control than in his last two outings, but the flip side is he missed over the middle of the plate a lot. Even when hitters sat on his fastball in the past, he could still blow it by them because he spotted it so well. Not so lately.

Then again, JV has always struggled against Cleveland for some reason. 13-14 against them coming into last night's game. Think about that... he's 128-69 in his career, and 14 of his 69 losses (over 20%) are against the Indians.

Jv is struggling with his control and location the speed is still there.....you are right Howie the Indians are one of those weird things for him........Looks to me hitters are taking a different approch to him and just trying to foul pitches off......raising his pitch count and frustrating him into trying to make a perfect pitch....maybe he should just trust his stuff and go right after hitters instead of looking for that perfect pitch.....I think he is going to be ok....he is a tough dude.....

Right now imo its mental with JV, baseball is a sport where theres too much time for players to think and that's affecting JV. He's slumping unfortunately more so than he has in quite some time but hopefully he snaps out of it soon. The seven strikeouts yesterday are a good indicator that he is physically fine and his stuff is still there.

The Iffster smells trouble for JV. His crystal ball shows him the image of Verlander in a lengthy conversation with Frank Tanana.

In other news........Frank Tanana is from Michigan....but the Iffster will not attempt to name the city. Iffy is always sympathetic to the ultra-sensitive.

Catchers and shortstops, only spots that batting avg makes no damn difference to me. And we have two guys at both spots that can't move their feet on defence. Drives me nuts!

agree 140%. Defense over offense at these positions ALL DAY. Especially catcher who handles the pitching staff and the entire game essentially!

kengel yeah it sucks that the guy has had a few bad starts. Every pitcher no matter how good goes through this. But for you to say hes not an ace after his performance the past seven years? Unreal, he has been more than ace for the tigers. I wont be so quick to turn my back on a player.

Actually NINE strikeouts in five IP for Verlander last night. But point taken. Quite an oddball game -- 10 hits and 9 strikeouts. Which I guess proves my point: when he missed, it was over the middle of the plate.

Not sure if Detroit was TAN-talizing Tanana's true home town, but I know he did pitch for Detroit Catholic Central High School.

Naming a person's hometown, on here, is a dangerous business. True hometowns need to be decided by selected people....never by outside references. Be careful.

Now...Frank T. was born in Detroit. Now maybe his birth city is linked to being born in a Detroit Hospital. (Very possible in the early 50s). Now, he went to high school in both Redford and Novi, MI. He briefly went to California State U, in Fullerton, CA. He has lived in Farmington, MI for awhile. Rumor has it that he also lived in Dearborn for awhile. People in the Detroit area have also claimed to have seen Frank in Grosse Pointe, Garden City, and Troy. So....to be safe, we will say that Mr. Tanana's actual hometown will ave to be decided by the experts at this site. (Although, Whitehall is probably out)

Thanks Hammer....but there is a group on this board that feel that all statistics lie. Their belief is that the 'eyeball' test on TV tells you all you need to know. (If you mention WAR or Range on here - you risk censor.

Cabrera also hitting .500 (8-for-16) career off Scott Diamond and coming into the series on a major roll. WHIPLASH alert for Diamond!

Poor michael bourne has let raturd rub off on him. Aaron that was the first thing i thought of when i seen that HR......Canseco......

I want it to be known....im not doubting JV.....so hes had a few bad starts.....hes still 5-4 with a decent ERA.....After these bad starts....2008 wasnt that long ago, but imagine if we would of just gave up on him then.

Theres injun fans that just a few days ago claimed ubaldo was a cy young caliber pitcher this year.....so what would that make JV? Even tho that injun fan was 12 yr old shane.

Cleaves 2 Million,
Ya, I remember raturd crashing open the outfield fence trying to grab a Jhonny P. inside the park homer a couple of years ago. How time fly's when your in first place.
Running 360 feet damn near killed Jhonny. I think it was like 26 seconds for him to circle them all.

barry bonds was right about Miguel Cabrera. There is no comparison. Cabrera dominates every offensive aspect of the game without using PEDS.
