Contribute every nickel you can into your 401k without worry.

I disagree. You are trusting your company to pick a company to pick your stocks. That's way to much trust. I day traded for over a decade and wouldn't trust my company to resource it out to a third party.

Fuck a 401k, do it your self. It's called day trading.

I've tried DIY home sergury a couple times. Both times I'd wished I'd opted for a better insurance plan.

I am not trusing my company with that money, I am trusting the hedge fund manager. His Previous results are there to see if you are willing to do the research. I can even go in and tell him if I would like it in low or high risk stocks or bonds. Really if you don't want your company involved you can go to any investment firm of your choosing and start an IRA.

I personally love the 401K, helps with retirement, and it was a free 5% raise(after it is fully vested anyway).

A pension plan on the other hand is an obligation of the employer, there is no individual ownership of any funds.
There are obviously pension plans whereby an employee can match the funds contributed by the employer because that is exactly what my pension is.

I have said for many years that I will retire and spend out my days abroad.
Holy crap we're going to be neighbors...I do know a lot of beautiful single Thai women though.

Until you abolish the two party system altogether Washington will never accomplish anything.
OMG...what a bonehead thing to say...let's here your ideas on how your socialism is going to make America a better country? You communist scumbag.

This statement confuses me?

Actually, you are telling the company how to invest your funds, as well as where you'd like the funds invested. You can also change up how your funds are invested whenever you'd like.

Outside of the vesting option, if your company offers a matching percentage, whoever you work for has nothing to do with your 401k and how the funds are allocated.

The default of the social security program is inevitable. To many people collecting it not enough contributions going in. It should have been privatized years ago but of course the simple math of how easily you could fix it didnt work with the individual party agendas so nothing happened. I have said for many years that I will retire and spend out my days abroad. Until you abolish the two party system altogether Washington will never accomplish anything.

Amen Brosive!

The two party system is fatally flawed- all it does is allow one party to block the other from getting anything useful done, and vice-versa. There needs to be several parties, all independent of each other. They should range from the far left to the far right and everywhere in between to ensure that every voter's interests are well represented.

Back to the 401K. It's still based on trust between you, your company and where they put your money. That's way to much trust.

You're still missing the boat here, Muzz. Your company has zero say over where the money in your 401k is invested- it's your money, not the company's. It's where you put your money, not where they put it.

I love my employer's 401k. Good matching and solid, fairly conservative returns. I invest a bit on the side, but I plan on retiring with a home that I own outright and enough money in the bank that a 4% return will allow my wife and I to live well without ever touching the principal.

I plan on never collecting a penny of government pension money - the math has been unsupportable since people stopped having 4 children and started living longer than age 71, but the population as a whole is stunningly stupid and politicians are weasels so it has never been corrected.

I liked oil in 2000 when everyone else was investing in tech. I liked oil in 2006 before it ran up, and I still like oil today. Look for companies that own their own reserves since refiners could be cut out any time. Take the present value of oil per barrel and subtract the $10/bbl it costs to extract and ship. that's the value of that company's 'bank account'. Now divide the 'asset' by the number of shares, compare to the share price, and look for bargains.

The discussion at hand with the pensions involved with the city of Detroit were straight up defined benefit plans.

"A" for effort, "F" for content Hawk. You see this is my opinion, its one shared by many others as well, not necessarily on this board(its never been discussed before) but across the country. Your disagreement with the idea is beyond irrelevant. Your opinion carries no more value than mine. If thats the best you have to discredit me my watchful little Hawk you are going to have to do alot better. Try using facts and the accuracy of my statements. I know you know what that means, its what I have been using all week to make you look stupid. This one is simply an epic failure.

hahahahahahahahaha. Meow a leftie. Along with Rush Limbaugh and Clint Eastwood, I guess.

And a defined contribution pension plan is extremely similar to a 401k. If you check, the company probably isn't allowed to touch the money at all once it's allocated to you.
