Wow, looking at the Cy Young voting for that year this guy had a 9.1 WAR. What a complete and utter travesty.
Wow I just looked it up. He was the best pitcher in the NL and didn't even finish in the top 10! How the fuck did Jack Billingham and his 89 ERA+ finish sixth???

I'm thinking Nolan Ryan is the only guy that could have walked that many
It's not him I looked it up. He walked wayyyyy more

Pete Rose Joe Morgan Ken Griffey George Foster Johnny Bench Tony Perez Dave Concepcion was apparently a better lineup than whatever slop the Mets through out there, hence Billingham had a better W-L record.
That would never happen now. I think recently that guy for the Mariners got the Cy Young with a losing record.

Felix Hernandez I think. I'm actually getting worried. 40 years later, it's clear that Billingham wasn't the best pitcher that year. If technology continues to advance, in 40 years they'll be saying Roberto Hernandez should have won the 2014 NL Cy Young

Even in 1974 you would think at least one of the voters would notice that he had 7 shutouts. Maybe they didn't like the fact that his first name was spelled Jon

Hence Jon Lieber's constant snubbing in the Cy Young votes

The guy that won it in 74 was pretty remarkable though. Mike Marshall. Forget about the 3.1 WAR and just look at what he did. 106 Games, 208 IP 21 saves, 15-12 record. He was basically a great reliever that they would use at the most important point in the game. He probably thinks closers of today, that can't go more than 1 inning two days in a row are total pussies.

His game log is unreal for 1974. It looks like if he came in and pitched 4 or more innings they would give him the next day off (although who knows, some of those may have been scheduled off days anyway) but anything 3 or less there was still a chance he would pitch the next day. And there's plenty of times when he's going every day 5 or 6 days in a row. That's just crazy by today's standards. Kent Tekulve was like that too but not quite to that extent

Do you think your best reliever should be used in the 7th/8th inning?

To me it depends on the situation. Like in a close game, where the opposing team has guys on base in the 7th or 8th with the middle of the lineup up I think the real "save situation" is that inning.

Couldn't agree more. But if you're up a run in the 7th and 8th and the other relievers retire the side in order or aren't in any trouble, then you should use your best reliever for a one run lead in the 9th

This one is lacking some clues. Most people, myself included don't have enough of an idea of how many batters a pitcher walks in a career to make an educated guess.

But what the hell, I'll throw out a couple more--
Blyleven
Schilling
Chris Short
