While we wait for more clues from Northeast, let me recount one of my more vivid memories as a young Phillies fan. 1981 Veterans Stadium Phillies Vs Astros Nolan Ryan vs Steve Carlton. It was a big crowd because of those two pitchers and also because Pete Rose was getting close to breaking an all time hits record. It wasn't quite as big as Cobb's record, it was Stan Musial's all time National League hits record. I forget if he was one hit away or two, but it was conceivable that he could do it that night.
Anyway, Rose leads off the bottom of the first with a single and I think that tied the record (or put him within one, I forget which) and the crowd is pumped up because now we have a good chance of seeing history.
Then, long story short, Ryan proceeds to strike him out the next three times up. Probably one of the only times Rose ever struck out 3 times in the same game.
And then the next day the players union went on strike and there was no major league baseball for like 2 and a half months.
Hopefully we won't have to wait that long for another clue about this pitcher.
