I'm not ignoring defense, I just put less value on it. I'd take Jeter's career over Ripken's, solely because he's better offensively.
Everyone should put less value on defense than offense, but the small gap in offense between Jeter and Ripken is made up for by the large gap in defense.

If you are going to put stock into WAR:

Jeter's overall WAR was 71.9
Ripken's overall WAR was 95.5

Ripken was better defensively. Not arguing that at all. I'm simply taking Jeter because he was better offensively.

Well Ripken had a 10-year prime from 1982-1991 where the average AL shortstop had a .664 OPS, and Ripken was 23.5% better than that at .820. Jeter had a 12-year prime from 1998-2009 where the average AL shortstop had a .729 OPS and he was 17.6% better than that at .858. So Jeter did have a prime that was 2 years longer, but Ripken had a better prime compared to the shortstop position at the time.

And then, if you want to look at their entire careers and compare them to the positions at the time we can. Ripken was a shortstop from 1982-1996 (we'll throw out the cup of coffee seasons), and he was a 3rd baseman from 1997-2001. The total OPS for his position from 1982-2001, was .691, and he was 14.1% higher at .789. Jeter, was obviously just a shortstop from 1996-2014 (once again ignoring his cup of coffee season), and the average OPS for AL shortstops in that time frame was .713. He was 14.6% higher at .817.

I show you this to demonstrate how truly close they were offensively, and therefore, the only way to actually pick Jeter over Ripken, would be to completely ignore defense.

One of the most overrated players of all time. Analysts are comparing what he did to what Michael Jordan did for NBA. Give me a break.

Jeter is famous because a) Yankees, b) World Series wins (yet had very little to do with them, thank Williams, O'Neill, Martinez), c) Yankees, d) short stop doesn't get a lot of glory, e) he banged tons of hot chicks, and f) Yankees.

He is one of like 15 guys that have 12,000 plate appearances and not even in the top half of a bunch of statistical categories.

Basically what I'm saying is, he's a good baseball player that doesn't deserve all the retirement hype let alone a Derek Jeter appreciation page on the MLB general forum. Keep it on the NY Yankees forum.

LMAO

"Had very little to do with them"

Holds more postseason records than probably any player in the history of the game

If you ignore everything Jeter did in the playoffs & forget about his 3,000+ hits he didn't have that great of a career.:heh:

Well to be fair, he joined a team immediately when the division series began. So naturally he has 50+ more games played than any non-Yankee.

But to his tremendous credit, he has a full season worth of games in the playoffs and his numbers against the best competition are better than his regular season numbers.

Totally fair......

If Paul O'Neill or Bernie Williams received the attention from the media, fans, etc. that Jeter has throughout, non-Yankee fans would be telling us how overrated they were, and how Jeter was really responsible for the titles

But because its DJ that gets that love, we glorify O'Neill and Bernie (who played a huge part of course), its just how it has always worked......if you watched baseball in the late 90's, you know Derek Jeter was in the middle of everything offensively and defensively once the clock ticked October

Doesn't he generally face a better crop of pitchers in the postseason?

And I'm not sure who made the definition that to be 'clutch,' you need to hit better in the playoffs....I mean, if someone hits .350 in the reg season and .350 in the playoffs, he can't be clutch?
