Why on earth do people keep mentioning DT as a place we may or could draft in the 1st round?

DT Geno Atkins
DT Damato Peko
DT Pat Sims (who everyone said we better ante up for or they be mad)
DE/DT Jamaal Anderson (one of our bigger free agents - not saying much but still)

Why in the hell would we invest a first round draft choice on a DT?

DE..I can see that, but not a damn DT. We probably have one of the top 5 DT rotations in all of football, there is no point in investing a 1st round pick there and barely see the kid get to play.

After watching Ray Rice and Arian Foster make our run D look like clowns, I'm pretty sure it could easily be listed as a need.

I am pretty sure it can't be. Nobody that is drafted will be able to make more of an impact that Atkins, take a year or two to match Peko, and Sims is oneof the better run stuffing DT's in the league as our #3.

DT is in no way a need on day 1, PERIOD!

Chalk it up to bad preparation by the coaching staff for the final two games, and our need to pull more guys out of the box to cover guys since our secondary was so poor.

Would have help if our MLB and safeties could tackle worth a damn last year.

Most of our defensive hard times vs the run came after Sims was lost for the season....even then, the guy who was most victimized was Rey M, who we definitely need to replace.....

Hightower? Seems like a much more logical choice than trying to sandwich a 1st round DT into an already super deep DT rotation.

I did a live mock on another site last week and took Hightower at 21.

He's definitely on the short list of players who could fall to us that we should draft.......not sure Marvin isn't still enamored of Rey M, though......

Rey M would serve as a decent super sub at Mike or Sam where he played the year before. We need LB depth since several keep getting hurt, some are basically college free agents, and we just traded Rivers.

Unless Rey came into camp in the best shape of his life and looked like a completely different MLB both physically and mentally, there is no reason we shouldn't consider his replacement, or at least a guy to push his ass to the brink of doing his best every down.

I would think DT is the only position of the defense where we really don't have a need....therefore I'm guessing that's the way we'll draft.....I can see it now, DeCastro, Hightower and Floyd will all be there, and we'll take the DT......

I'm taking Brockers at 21 if he's there. Dude is a monster and it would be an ideal situation for him to come in rotate in with Peko and Atkins. If he plays to his potential (or even close to it) he and Atkins would be probably the most disruptive tackle combo in the game. I'm a BPA guy and eventhough CB is a bigger need just not really a fan of any of the guys slotted at 17 to 21 (Gilmore, Kirkpatrick, Jenkins). Also, Sims and Anderson are serviceable and provide depth but that's about it at this point and as others pointed out the front 7 got gouged late in the year

While I'm definitely not as up on player rankings as some of you guys are, I saw somewhere that Brockers was rated 12th overall, so the likelihood of his dropping to even 17, much less 21, would not seem to be so good......

And even then, aren't we looking to improve this team this year since we can't do a f'n thing in FA? We "need" certain positions slotted from teh draft and DT is not one of them. If Suh was in this draft and he fell all the way to 17, I would not take him knowing what we have on our DT depth chart already.

he's all over the place. Generally most the mocks I see have him anywhere from the mid teens to mid twenties.

I'm really glad we addressed this issue during the offseason.

The two I've seen most recently have him 12th and 14th.....but you could say that about almost any player not in the top five or six......for example, I've seen Barron as high as 8th and as low as 24th......I saw one list that rated Hightower 41 overall, and another that had him in the top ten......not sure who's "list" I'm supposed to believe......
