Keim - Handicapping the DC job...

The Washington Redskins continue to seek a new defensive coordinator, a search that began Jan. 6, when they fired Joe Barry. Here are five known candidates for the job. There may be others, too, but these are the ones who either have interviewed or will:

Gus Bradley: I know he’s been linked with the Chargers, but until he actually takes the job then he remains a top target for the Redskins. New Chargers coach Anthony Lynn has other strong ties with defensive coaches from some excellent staffs. This will be interesting to watch and Bradley could still become the next defensive coordinator in Washington. He won’t be a miracle worker -- the talent base needs to improve regardless of who would have become coordinator (check Wade Phillips’ past; he had some bad years, too, especially early in his career). But general manager Scot McCloughan knows exactly what Bradley needs for his defense, having helped find them when both were in Seattle. Bradley would be a strong hire.

Mike Pettine: He, too, has been in charge of good defenses. Anyone who dismisses him based on what he did as a head coach in Cleveland would just be foolish. (There are plenty of good assistant coaches who have failed as head coaches. You get a head coaching job based on your work as an assistant). Pettine is considered a tough, hard-nosed coach and that would be a good thing in Washington. In four years as the New York Jets' defensive coordinator, the team finished in the top 10 in yards allowed each time. In points allowed, they went from first to sixth and then 20th in each of the past two years. In one season as Buffalo’s coordinator, his defense ranked 20th in points and 10th in yards (they were 26th and 22nd, respectively, the year before his arrival). If Bradley isn’t hired, then Pettine makes sense.

Greg Manusky: I don’t know where he’d be in the pecking order, only that he’s the best in-house candidate after serving as outside linebackers coach this past season. He was the defensive coordinator in San Francisco when McCloughan was the general manager. And Manusky works well with head coach Jay Gruden, for what that’s worth (it does help). It’s believed Manusky would play a more attacking style of defense. There’s a desire to play more aggressively the way, say, Arizona does. Again, more talent is needed no matter what style they employ. In nine years as a coordinator with three teams, Manusky has had five defenses rank 20th or worse in points per game and three in yards per game. He’s had two top-10 units in points allowed.

Rob Ryan: While he’s at Redskins Park Monday, it’s hard to imagine him being hired. His defenses have too often been criticized for trying to do too much, leading to confusion among players. It’s a little unclear who exactly was in charge of Buffalo’s defense this past season. But in his first 12 years holding the title of defensive coordinator, Ryan had two years with a top-five defense in yards allowed and one top five in points. Meanwhile, he had six defenses that were 27th or worse in yards allowed and five that were 25th or worse in points surrendered. And in seven years, his defenses ranked 20th or worse in both categories. One former NFL head coach said to always look at the track record. With Ryan, it’s a hard sell. My guess: The Redskins know this.

Jason Tarver: The Washington Post reported he would interview for the job. Tarver spent three years as Oakland's defensive coordinator. During that time the Raiders ranked 28th or worse in points allowed and were 18th, 22nd and 21st, respectively, in yards allowed. The year before he took over the Raiders ranked 29th in both yards and points. He was a linebackers coach the past two years in San Francisco. He also was the outside linebackers coach with the 49ers from 2005-10 when McCloughan was in San Francisco.

With the exception of Ryan (which I think is laughable) I do believe the Jay and the skins are casting a wide net in terms of interviews and I'm hoping there are candidates still in the works to come.

That depends. We could count interviewing Rob as a cross dresser as a minority.

Problem solved.

If all else fails, and we need a minority to interview, I can make a quick flight to Ashburn. :D

Dude there's only one minority in the world, everyone else is of color. However you present an interesting question if they too joined in on the fun.

At this point its Pettine and its not even close. Or, you make Bradley an offer he can't refuse. You don't continue to bring in failures and cast aways.

Duke... got to ask... if Wade were really the end all be all, why would Denver let him go?? Maybe they realized that with the level of talent, it wasnt so much Wade as the talent he had to work with?

Another possible candidate for DC. Again, from Chris Russell but he was right about Ryan...

DCHotRead.com has learned that Manusky's officialy interview is expected to happen on Tuesday and that Chargers defensive coordinator, John Pagano, is on the Redskins list and is expected to meet with Washington, possibly as early as this week, assuming the Chargers do not decide to retain him, which they are not expected to do.

Pagano's contract status is unknown with the Los Angeles Chargers, who hired Anthony Lynn as their new head coach last last week. If his contract is expired, that would allow him to meet with Washington sooner than later. The Chargers reportedly decided to keep some of Pagano's assistants but have been trying to lure the aforementioned, Bradley, to join Lynn and run the Chargers defense.
