Yeah Shanny did, but Gruden retained him for his 1st year as HC of the Skins.

I always figured that was more Scott's decision than Grudens, at the time the "line" was for some continuity. Either way, Gruden didn't really pick him. Regardless, if Gruden doesn't get this team to the playoffs next year he is almost certainly bounced out. Can't just let this team stagnate, it has to have some forward momentum.

AGREED! Although I worry Gruden's loyalty to his staff my blind him from making tough decisions.
The OC and DC hiring will be critical. More so worried about the D.C.....The offense may even be a little more efficient, I assume some things will be, and need to be simplified in the red zone

Yeah, I'll co-sign everything you said. I'm not real worried about the OC position cuz it's Gruden's offense. They'll get that fiugured that and like you say, maybe better than before.

The DC job has me worried though. There's really no benefit for anyone with some clout behind their name to take it. It just boggles my mind that Snyder and Allen, who looks to have become a newer version of yes man Vinny Cerratto, seem as clueless as they do. I'm beginning to wonder if it really is all about money or something else that's above winning for them.

Yeah, they didn't seem to have as many problems in the red zone the season before, wonder what difference there were in playcalling, situations, etc. My gut tells me they tried to get too cute with the playcalling this season.

Shit, at this point I'd settle for a litle stagnation. It's gotta beat going backwards.

Very few coaches keep their job for life. That metric is kind of silly. I said he wasn't great but he had good years. Both Bradley and Quinn got HCing jobs due to be DC for Carroll. Anyhow Dungy thought enough of Manusky to make him a DC.

Chris Russell (who often gets it wrong) is saying the Skins are interested in Rob Ryan. I'll believe it when I see an interview.

Agree that Chris doesn't know his sphincter from a hole in the ground gets it wrong a lot. I would hate either Ryan being here. I am not a fan of the Ryan's. They would bring more distraction than we need.

john kiem on the DC
The Washington Redskins still need a defensive coordinator, which is the result of some bad timing, a quest to be thorough and their own questions about the roster and job security.

The bad timing: Carolina defensive coordinator Sean McDermott became the Buffalo Bills head coach. That led to Steve Wilks’ promotion from secondary coach to McDermott’ replacement. He was on the Redskins’ radar. More bad timing: Anthony Lynn was named the Los Angeles Chargers' head coach and another Redskins' candidate, Gus Bradley, will interview with him -- it's been reported that they were a package deal. We'll see.

They interviewed Bradley and Mike Pettine (still free). Houston Texans linebackers coach Mike Vrabel can now be interviewed, if there’s interest. They still have in-house candidate Greg Manusky. More interviews will take place.

From the beginning, the Redskins wanted to interview “seven or eight” candidates and make sure they got it right. So their panic level is a few notches below that of their fan base at this point. Still, based on what I’ve heard as well as common sense, there are some obstacles they must overcome in this quest:

Talent. The Redskins’ defense needs an overhaul, regardless of the system they play this season. If you’re a defensive coordinator, you will look at the talent to see how long it will take to run what you want – at the level you want. It’s definitely a factor.

Who are the Redskins’ young defensive building blocks that should tempt another coach? They had two full-time starters 25 or younger – corner Bashaud Breeland and linebacker Preston Smith. There are questions about both players and the direction they’re headed. Su’a Cravens, 21 years old, might be an excellent strong safety; we don’t know yet. The Redskins’ best defensive players – corner Josh Norman and linebacker Ryan Kerrigan – are 29 and 28, respectively. Both are good, but the point is: Washington lacks exciting young talent (especially in the front seven). Also: What will linebacker Junior Galette be able to do after missing consecutive seasons with Achilles’ injuries?

If you’re Bradley, do you think they have the talent to run the 4-3 the way you want? (Answer: no; and it may take a couple years). Just because they used four-man fronts in their nickel does not mean they can effectively play this style.

But the benefit for Bradley would be that he knows general manager Scot McCloughan understands exactly the sort of player he wants and needs for his defense. McCloughan was part of helping build Seattle’s defense, which Bradley once coached. That matters, too. But Bradley has been tied to new Chargers head coach Lynn and is scheduled to interview with them.

Job security. What will happen if the Redskins don’t make the playoffs this season, Jay Gruden’s fourth year on the job? The answer really is who knows because it all depends on the reasons why.

The Redskins are 17-14-1 in the past two years combined -- not great, but it’s the first time since 1996-97 they’ve posted consecutive winning seasons. And that followed a two-year stretch where they were 7-25. There are definite positives and the offensive staff remains a strong one even without Sean McVay (I've been told multiple times all will remain; as far as tight ends coach Wes Phillips, one source said this weekend that the Rams have not yet requested permission to interview him. Another source said there's nothing in place, but that you can "never say never.").

Still, if you’ve followed this franchise for any length of time, you know the possibilities that exist if they don’t improve this season.

And if you’re trying to decide between two places – in a culture where job security is difficult to find -- what would you do? Please don’t say that you'd come here knowing you could take over if Gruden is fired; do you really think either Phillips or Bradley are in position to think like that? Bradley just went 14-48 as a head coach; he’d have to completely lack self-awareness to assume he'd be a solution in that scenario. Wade Phillips will turn 70 before next season; his head coaching days are done.

There are ways to overcome these issues. Money, of course, is one way. The Redskins can sell them, too, on their offense (assuming they re-sign enough key pieces) and how that can help the defense, giving them time to develop and grow. Any defensive coordinator would want to be a complement to a strong offense with an experienced quarterback (and this depends in part on how good they think Kirk Cousins is; I don’t know that answer).

Finally, they have the cap space to lure free agents. The front office knows it needs a talent infusion, and they also have nine draft choices to provide more building blocks.

Someone will ultimately take this job -- and it can still be someone good -- but these are the hurdles the Redskins must clear.

I heard on the radio the Skins were going to interview him. IMO, he is the worst DC in the league...
