Well, it is the Bengals. And you're right, judging by past history we can't expect them to get much value out of the extra third rounder. But I do think it was a solid move - I just don't buy that DeCastro is head and shoulders above the other guards. Who has he played out west?

One scouts/analysts' take on the guards:

"...I'm sure many will disagree, but I believe Zeitler is a better athlete than DeCastro. He has quick and active feet that allowed him to be very effective in the zone run game. He squared up well as a puller in the power run game, showing strength on contact. Zeitler was not as purely physical and nasty as DeCastro, but I saw a more athletic and complete OG."

This was posted before the draft, when this person that DeCastro would go 17 to the Bengals and Steelers would take Zeitler.

I've said it too many times over the past day, but I'll say it again. Pro scouts did not grade DeCastro as high as many talking heads thought they would. It's easy to make a case for Zeitler..... He was the best lineman on an offensive line that has continuously developed first rate NFL talent. He's a solid pick, a known commodity, and he netted you an extra third rounder.

If DeCastro wasn't rated so high, then why didn't the Steelers pick Zeitler? We got the second rated player at the guard position by trading out of position to get the best rated player at the position, and there's no way to spin that differently. As far as the third round pick goes, we'll just have to see if we can come up with a guy who makes up the difference. Given our draft history, I'd be willing to bet we can't.

Because each team values different players differently. Maybe they thought Zeitler would fit better into the style of the WC offense? Just because a bunch of hair talks up a certain player doesn't mean that that guy is the best. There have been plenty of people that have said that the guard position was close between Zeitler, Glenn, and DeCastro. Maybe DeCastro gets a little more run/pub because he blocked for Luck? Dunno.

Eitherway, it was still a solid pick.

I didn't mean that Zeitler was ranked higher than DeCastro..... I just meant that if they had very similar grades, why not take the 2nd best and pick up another top 100 pick? And yes, we are the Bengals and we'll probably blow that pick. But under that logic, we should have just traded our entire draft to move into the top 10 since we were going to blow the rest of the picks anyway.

And I didn't mean I wasn't happy to have Zeitler....by all accounts he should come in to camp as far and away the best guard on the roster. Zeitler,Wheaton>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Livings, McGlynn

Let's just hope the third isn't another Dontay(I have a headache)Moch.

I would be ok with this trade if the Bengals had the foresight to package this pick and maybe one or 2 of their 5th picks to grab another 2nd round pick to try to get a potential starter to fill one of the many holes we still have.
I'm not banking on the Bengals front office to find some diamond in the 4th or 5th round.
