When I made my 5th round picks, I thought “Man, I really like a lot of the players still left - I should for sure get a few decent guys in the 7th round when I come back around. . . “

And then y’all decided to go and crush it in the 6th round. So many of the guys I was hoping for all just came off the board in the past ten picks or so. Going to have to completely redo my board now.

First I was going to take Matt Waletzko because the value was too good. I think he goes about Rd 4 of the real draft. Get snubbed. Then my backup plan was S Percy Butler.. Get snubbed.
Also like the pick of Tre Turner. I am little surprised at how few WR's have gone from about Rd 4 on.

I have a tough time seeing the value in drafting a punter any earlier than this. This amount of punter hype is tough to live up to.
I have a tough time seeing the value in drafting a punter. Period.

-Signed,

A Steelers fan who has watched them burn a couple fifth rounders the past ten years on "the top punter" in a given year who both proved to be utterly fungible.

The two best ways to get a good punter, IMO:
1. Go pick up some Aussie Rules football dude off the street for league minimum. Have him punt for you for a decade. Profit.

2. Go sign guy who has been a pretty good punter for a decade as a FA. Have them kick for you for another 5 years before he retires. Profit.

I have not really been that keen on how this draft has fallen for Pittsburgh, but I'll certainly not complain to get a guy with that size/length/positional versatility in the 6th round.

The cherry picked clips I've got to watch of Uwazurike showing him on the inside vs. the outside make me feel pretty good about him playing over the nose and handling doubles. The Steelers run defense was ghastly in '21, due mostly to the fact that once 100-year old Tyson Alualu went down for the year they didn't have a single other DT that could play the 0 and command the double. This guy has the chops to maybe develop into a 2-down run killer if nothing else. May be able to play some 5-tech if he can't, so why not?

To me Araiza is different. Best punting prospect to come out since Dustin Colquitt. I am not a fan of taking punters in the first 3 rounds... But why not take a player in Round 4 that could be with you and one of the best in the league for the next 15 years?

Punters just like any other position you take in Round 4 have a bust rate. I understand.

This sounds like exactly what Steeler fans said about Dan Sepulveda.

"Who?" Precisely. :)

I used to think punters were fungible, but having watched the Packers special teams for the last decade I’ve come around to a different attitude towards it. No picks before the late 5th round, but if you see a guy you like it’s worth the investment.

To me, the 5th / 6th round area is the sweet spot of the draft to start looking at specialist that you might use a pick on.

Typical Patriots. Trying to cheat by taking someone selected 2 rounds ago.

@Mebert I have had a couple requests that you start posting player position and college with your picks. If at all possible. If you don't know their position or college text me before you post. ;)

For me, it's round 7 or (much more preffered) nothing for specialists. Their too easy to find "on the street."

FWIW, Punters pretty much ARE fungible. Even if a certain team has bad luck and keeps bringing in suck-tastic options....going and signing three more street guys and keeping the better one down? Kickers are relatively fungible too, for the most part. Less so than P, though.

Hell, the best of both positions that the Steelers have had over the past, say, 15-20 years were scrap heap types: Shaun Suisham and Chris Boswell were/are typically very reliable and productive during their time in Pitt (with caveats. 2018 Boswell? Woof). Jordan Berry averaged over 44 yards per punt during his five years with the Steelers...which is .4 yards less than Dustin Colquitt's career mark over the same period (and all it got him was cut for dude they drafted in the 7th round anyway). Not a single one of those guys were drafted by the Steelers.

Anyway, </Punter/kicker rant. :) I'll get off my stupid soap box. "Kids, don't let other kids draft specialists before round 7, if at all."

They aren’t easy for the Browns to find lol. But look at the FA kickers there isn’t much to choose from. Kinda doubting the take a kicker but York could come into the league and be a top 5 kicker imo. The Browns can’t afford to lose so many close games bc of special teams woes

I get it and I agree with you to an extent... There are some exceptions for me.

Arazia is an exception. Evan McPhearson is an exception. There are a fair amount of exceptions. If it isn't for the Bengals using a 5th round pick on McPhearson last year they don't win the Super Bowl this year.

Guys like Justin Rohrwasser, Sam Sloman are not exceptions to me coming out. Essentially Rohrwasser wasn't even on the map until he killed his proday at Marshall.

Denver took a P back in the day from Cal named Nick Harris. He couldn't beat out Tom Rouen and was traded to the Lions. I don't recall him being a "great" punter coming out of college. I wouldn't take a P or K just to take one because you need one but there are some REALLY good one's I wouldn't have a problem taking Rd 4/5. More willing to take a K then a P early on day 3. But they have to be special.

I know it doesn't always pan out but same is said for any position.

Roberto Aguyao is a prime example of not working out. I thought that guy was going to end up being the Justin Tucker of the NFL coming out of college.

Agree and it depends on the situation with the team. I feel the Browns don't have too many holes but special teams is a big hole. They signed the ex-GB punter a couple weeks ago but they still need a kicker. They have lost so many close games where kicking was the story after. You're right, with kickers you really don't know how they are going to pan out even if they seem destined to succeed in the NFL.

You sniped me there, lol. Had to rally with Eric Johnson instead.
