I thought I read somewhere yesterday (don't remember where) that only $5 million of the $16 million of Bertans' 2024-25 salary would be guaranteed if he was to play in 75 percent of his team's games the season before that.

Provided we have the standard 82 games next year, he would need to play in 62 games next season in order for his contract to be fully guaranteed.

Could the Thunder theoretically sit him on purpose for the first 21 games? Would there be legal consequences if they did so?

How would this work exactly???

They aren’t going to be so obvious about it.

But if Vegas sets the over/under at 61.5 for Bertans appearances, take the under.

Probably as safe as it gets.

Studied on this a little more, if the Thunder were to waive him at some point in the coming year prior to him playing 62 games they would only owe him $5 M for the last year.

The NBA changed the rules on how it treats non-guaranteed deals in a trades.

In years previous his contract if OKC was trading him next offseason would have looked like $16M going out the door and $16M coming in the door to the acquiring team (who would have then just cut him and gained $11M in cap space).

But now his contract going out the door will look like $5M going out the door to OKC but will still look like $16M coming in to the new team.

I am guessing what we are seeing with this contract is what most of these types of deals where teams are trading non-guaranteed contracts to teams that need them to create space will look like moving forward. But I am not sure how it really functions yet until we see one of them happen. This one will be a good one to keep an eye on. Because it is pretty obvious he isnt worth the deal they just gave him.....so it must have a different motive behind it.
