Dan Uggla's disappointing four-year run in Atlanta officially came to an end on Friday, as the Braves requested unconditional release waivers on the veteran second baseman and ate the $18 million owed to him for the remainder of this year and next.

Here's the latest on where Uggla could land next.

The two places being talked about most are San Francisco and Cincinnati, which makes sense from purely a need standpoint.

The Giants spent the first half of the season without Marco Scutaro, and the fill-in job by Brandon Hicks eventually fizzled out. Even with Scutaro now back with the big league club, he's not expected to play more than a couple times per week and a platoon type scenario with Uggla may be an option the team considers.

Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com tweeted Friday: "I can confirm that Dan Uggla is under consideration for #SFGiants. He's being talked about."

Meanwhile, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reported Friday that "one big-league exec mentioned the Reds as possible landing spot for Dan Uggla with Brandon Phillips out," adding "Uggla is a career .296 hitter with a 1.053 OPS in 27 games at Great American Ballpark."

Other teams with second base issues such as Toronto may also enter the picture for Uggla, but for now look for the 34-year-old to land with the Giants or Reds. One other thing to keep in mind is the availability of Dustin Ackley in Seattle; teams with a need to upgrade at second base may covet the younger Ackley, who played at second his first three years in the bigs, over Uggla.

If Cincy is indeed interested, I would presume they would be a more likely destination for Uggla.

A) They have an injury at 2B, and need to fill it in. The Giants have Marco back, and Panik. PT isn't going to be as guaranteed.

B) Cincy is a better hitters park. He probably has a better chance of re-establishing value there and earning another year or 2 in the majors.

WOW!!!

Not surprised in the Giants POV, but I am surprised from an Uggla POV. As SFGRTB said, The Reds just appeared to make more sense for him to get his career going again.

GREAT no-risk signing, though. If he ends up turning it around, we have him next year as well at league min. If he is, in fact done, it costs NOTHING (a few thousand dollars for paying him AAA salary for a couple weeks)

Only risk: if Sabean thinks he's now done all he's gonna do...

THAT's why I couldn't find the article - it's for "ESPN insiders".

I didn't hear Miller talking about Uggla, musta happened while I was squeezing out a log ... how appropriate.

:laugh3:

At AAA, he has a 9.50 ERA in 25 games, with a SHIP of 2.25.

36 IP, 64 H, 17 BB, 18 K

He has really fallen off a cliff since 2012.

That is scary bad.

And last year he wasn't much better. 46 IP, 65 H, 22 BB, 24 K, 6.07 ERA.

I guess Cincy wasn't that interested, or Uggla has a thing for SF.

Goodness....That is AWFUL.

Yea. I dont think Boggs is in any plans for this year. We have our own guys in the system who would be higher on the ladder, I think. I suspect Boggs is more of a system-depth/see-what-we-can-do-with-him situation.

Remember that Uggla has an Aug 1st opt-out clause in his minor-league contract. He isn't "depth" for the minors, and he is 100% a "this year" issue (or he'll be gone otherwise).

Not sure if this a response to my post, but I was speaking about Boggs only. Uggla is not system depth. He would not accept a contract with a team that had him pegged as system depth.

Nope, I was contrasting Boggs vs. Uggla. The big concern to me w/ Ugly is that Bochy won't be able to resist starting him 5 times a week.
