This is true for the early years..... But look closely. His base salary this year is only 3 million. It jumps to 10 million next year and 13 million the year after. Next year the cap hit to cut him would be 7 million - But a 7 million dollar 'dead-cap' hit means nothing to the Bengals. They'd be happy not to spend that money rather than pay out 10 million to a quarterback that can't win. His base pay in 2017 is 13 million with only a 4 million cap-hit if they cut him.

Make no mistake -- If Dalton fucks up this season, the Bengals will use him as a scapegoat and move on to the next (cheaper) version. Hell, Marvin might even use it as a scapegoat to get himself another extension.

Andy Dalton Contract, Salary Cap Details & Breakdowns | Spotrac

The only thing Marvin needs to do to continue getting extensions is show up..............

Granted, I didn't watch a whole lot of Alabama football when AJ played, so my only real stand out for him is his 99 yard bomb that should have won the game against Auburn. Yes, I know he didn't actually throw the ball 99 yards, but he chucked it pretty well if I remember right. Unless his weak arm is from his shoulder surgery, I think his arm is fine.

Knowing the Bengals, though, if AJ starts breathing any heat down Dandy's neck, they will try to swing some kind of trade. If they can get anything better than a 5th round pick for him, it will be a win in their eyes.

if Andy Dalton loses another playoff game I'm just going to start calling him Jon Kitna.

evidently Dalton is stinking things up in practice even to the extent that Hobspin can't even polish the turd. Hue Jackson is running out of patience.

2. Andy Dalton is surrounded by one of the AFC's most talented rosters. That didn't stop the quarterback from throwing a flood of bad balls in Tuesday's practice, with Bengals.com writer Geoff Hobson noting that Dalton and wideout A.J. Green "appeared not to be on the same page."

3. After Cincy's four straight one-and-done playoff appearances, play-caller Hue Jackson acknowledged this week: "I'm tired of our organization being the brunt of jokes." Dalton's play will decide how far this team can go, which is scary, but Jackson -- one of the game's top strategists -- is stressing a versatile attack that uses players all over the field.

I wish he was Tom Brady come playoff time. But that wishing is not going to get us real far.

Maybe Andy should have someone deflate the balls for him then

It would be a good start. Dalton doesn't seem like a guy with big hands to control a highly inflated ball. Deflate some of that air and you gain velocity and control over the throw. I understand why Brady did it. Wonder if he would have been the same QB all these years with overly inflated balls and small hands. Wonder how good Dalton could be with slightly deflated balls to gain more control and velocity on throws. Hmmmm...

Sounds like a medical issue.

Joe Flacco is considered one of the best big game QBs in the league now. His passer ratings in his first 5 playoff games were 59, 89, 18, 10 and 48. He threw for less than 200 yds in all of them. The Ravens still managed to go 3-2 in the playoffs during that stretch. The defenses are generally tougher and there's obviously more pressure and nerves in those games for a young QB. The whole team has failed to step up their play in those games.

This isn't intended as a complete defense of Dalton. I think he has physical limitations that will keep him from ever becoming a true franchise QB. But with that said he's serviceable and you can win with him under the right circumstances.

generally, when he faces good defenses he folds like a lawn chair. the play calling has been suspect in some of those games though. one of the problems is, they don't seem to realize that he's not that great. they seem to want to make him keep throwing until he takes the form of rodgers or manning. and that isn't going to happen. we need to use a balanced offense that doesn't force the QB to have to 'save' the game, we got to reduce his roll to a game manager and not a playmaker. that's what he is, and that's all we should expect.
